  20. A few words about the Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File:
  21.  
  22. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort by 
  23. antivirus vendors throughout the world to come up with one 
  24. standard by which customers can verify their antivirus installations.
  25.  
  26.  
  27. To test your installation, you would copy the following line into its
  28. own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  29.  
  30. X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  31.  
  32. When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.
  33.  
  34. When VirusScan is applied to this file, SCAN will report finding the
  35. EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  36.  
  37. It is very important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS!  However,
  38. users often have the need to test that their installations function
  39. correctly.  The antivirus industry, through the European Institute
  40. for Computer Antivirus Research, has adopted this standard to 
  41. facilitate this need.

  43. Please delete the file when installation testing is completed so 
  44. unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily alarmed.

  49. The next DAT update is scheduled for July with another in Sept.
  50. Intermediate "emergency" updates will be available only through the 
  51. BBS.

  56. When a macro virus is detected in conjunction with other viruses, the
  57. macro virus remover will not work.  We are still working on this.  If
  58. you encounter this, you can remove the other virus first or work in
  59. a separate area.
