  18.          This document  describes briefly what is TXFORM, and explains  how
  19.          to install and run it (you should read this before anything else). 
  20.          
  21.          It also tells you how to print the documentation, where to get the
  22.          latest version, and how to contact the author.

  26.          1 What is TXFORM

  29.          The  TXFORM program  is  intended  for those  who  need to prepare
  30.          nicely presented ASCII documentation files, for example to prepare
  31.          documentation files to be distributed with shareware. 
  32.          
  33.          The file you are reading,  as  well as other  TXFORM documentation
  34.          files, have  been  prepared with TXFORM,  and are thus examples of
  35.          what you can do with TXFORM.

  38.           │ TXFORM reads  data  contained  in  an  ASCII  file  that you │ 
  39.           │ prepare, and produces a nicely formatted output file. You do │ 
  40.           │ not care to  the  details of formatting while preparing  the │ 
  41.           │ input file.  Instead, you insert control strings that define │ 
  42.           │ the format options, and TXFORM do the job for you.           │

  72.          TXFORM is  particularly easy  to use  and powerful when you  use a
  73.          multiple windows editor that allows you to execute a command under
  74.          DOS  without leaving the editor.  See  in the  appendices  of  the
  75.          "USER'S GUIDE"  how I  use TXFORM to get a  powerful and  flexible
  76.          ASCII editor.

  80.          2 TXFORM is Shareware
  81.          ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  83.          TXFORM  is SHAREWARE,  user supported  software.  TXFORM  is  made
  84.          available for a free 45 day trial period. If you find the  program
  85.          of use and wish to continue  using it, you are obliged to purchase
  86.          a personal license, that is to register this program.

  88.          To learn how to register this program  (and to see what incentives
  89.          are  available to registered users) see the  file REGISTER.DOC. It
  90.          also contains a registration form for you to send in. To print the
  91.          registration  form, make  sure your printer is on and ready,  then
  92.          type

  98.          3 Installation
  99.          ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  101.          To install TXFORM, follow the following [conditional] steps: 
  102.          
  103.             ■ If you already own a registered version of TXFORM: 
  104.          
  105.                  - make a backup copy of your TXFORM.EXE file in some other
  106.                    directory 
  107.          
  108.                  - after  successful  installation of  the new  version  in
  109.                    accordance  with the  instructions that follow,  consult
  110.                    the  file REGISTER.DOC to  see  how you can  immediately
  111.                    register your new version of TXFORM 
  112.          
  113.             ■ If  you have a previous  version  of TXFORM installed in some
  114.               directory: 
  115.          
  116.                  - copy the TXFORM distribution file into that directory 
  117.          
  118.                  - uncompress  the  distribution   file   OVERWRITING   all
  119.                    existing files 
  120.          
  121.                  - see the HISTORY.TXT file that describes  the differences
  122.                    between TXFORM v1.0, v1.1 & v1.2

  131.             ■ If you do not have a previous version of TXFORM installed: 
  132.          
  133.                  - create any directory 
  134.          
  135.                  - copy and  uncompress  the TXFORM distribution file  into
  136.                    it. 
  137.          
  138.             ■ You  may then  run  TXFORM  from anywhere  you like (put  the
  139.               TXFORM  directory  in  your  path if  you wish),  TXFORM will
  140.               always work in the directory that is the current one when you
  141.               call it. 
  142.          
  143.             ■ Note  that the only file you  need  is  TXFORM.EXE  (plus, of
  144.               course,  your  own  input  files). All  other files  are  for
  145.               documentation, demonstration and registration purposes.

  149.          4 Running TXFORM

  152.          Suppose you have prepared  an input  file  called "DEMO.TXT",  and
  153.          want to  create  an output formatted file called "DEMO.OUT". Go in
  154.          the directory  where the  input  file  is  located, and  type  the
  155.          command:

  158.                    TXFORM  DEMO.TXT DEMO.OUT

  162.           │    TXFORM will produce an output file called "DEMO.OUT".     │

  168.          To learn how to use TXFORM, you may:

  170.             ■ Print the documentation, and read it 
  171.          
  172.             ■ Study  the demonstration  file "DEMO.TXT"  and the  resulting
  173.               formatted file "DEMO.OUT". The first file is provided as part
  174.               of the TXFORM package. The second  one is created  by  typing
  175.               the command exactly as shown here above.
