  1. Welcome to NetHack!                ( description of version 3.1-- )
  2.  
  3.         NetHack is an adventure game where your character descends into 
  4. the depths of the Dungeon of Doom in search of the Amulet of Yendor.
  5. You are accompanied by your faithful pet who can be trained to do all 
  6. sorts of things.  The Dungeon is guarded by many evil and not-so-evil
  7. monsters, making your quest quite perilous.
  8.  
  9. NetHack uses the following symbols to represent items found in the Dungeon:
  10.  
  11. )        A weapon of some sort.
  12. [        A suit or piece of armor.
  13. %        A piece of food (not necessarily healthy).
  14. /        A wand.
  15. =        A ring.
  16. ?        A scroll.
  17. !        A potion.
  18. (        A tool.
  19. $        A pile of gold.
  20. *        A gem or rock (possibly valuable, possibly worthless).
  21. +        A spell book.
  22. "        An amulet, or a spider web.
  23. 0        An iron ball.
  24. _        An iron chain.
  25. `        A boulder or statue.
  26.  
  27. ^        A trap (once you detect it).
  28. >        A way to the next level.
  29. <        A way to the previous level.
  30. @        You or another human.

  32. You can also find out what a symbol represents by typing
  33. '/' and following the directions to move the cursor
  34. to the symbol in question.  For instance, a 'd' may
  35. turn out to be a dog.

  37. Some information is displayed on the bottom line.  You see your
  38. attributes, your alignment, what dungeon level you are on, how many
  39. hit points you have now (and will have when fully recovered), what
  40. your armor class is (the lower the better), your experience level,
  41. and the state of your stomach.
