~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The installation process extracts a file called PC3D.MAN. This is a
ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.
Following the installation, make sure that the PC3D.MAN file is
indeed on your default directory. Then, to print this manual:
(1) Make sure that the your printer is ON and there is enough
paper in it (the manual is about 80 pages).
(2) From the DOS prompt, type
COPY PC3D.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
then you need to use the command COPY PC3D.MAN COM1, or
COPY PC3D.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your
printer is connected to).
===== Installation =====================================
The installation procedure for ProtoCAD 3D is quite simple. The package
includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the entire process.
You will need about 1 MB of available disk space on the hard drive on
which you plan to install ProtoCAD 3D.
The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received DRAFT
Choice.
INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
o Place the ProtoCAD 3D distribution diskette in the
appropriate diskette drive.
o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
the MS-DOS command, "a:install".
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program. You
will have a chance to approve installation before any changes are
actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The program will
ask you for a destination directory, and will copy the ProtoCAD 3D
files to that directory. If you received ProtoCAD 3D on two
diskettes, you will need to insert Disk 2 in the diskette drive
when asked to do so. If you so direct it, the installation program
will install executable programs and documentation in other
directories of your choice. It will make no other changes;
specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys
files.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
If you downloaded ProtoCAD 3D from a BBS (or received it in the form of
archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
following steps.
o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
directions for this from the same source from which you received
the package.
o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted. For
example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
the ProtoCAD 3D package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the
MS-DOS command, "c:\tempdir\install".
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
the ProtoCAD 3D files to that directory. If you so direct it, the
installation program will install executable programs and
documentation in other directories of your choice. It will make no
other changes; specifically, it will not modify your autoexec.bat
or config.sys files.
When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed ProtoCAD 3D
(C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.
YOU'RE READY TO GO
Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the documents
(filename extension "doc", "txt" and "man") which have been installed.
We hope you enjoy the program.
This section contains information that did not make it to the printed
manual as well as modifications contained in the maintenance releases of
ProtoCAD 3D.
NOTES/ADDITIONS TO THE USER'S MANUAL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. When a new view is selected, an image extents scan is made and the
image is placed in the center of the screen (similar to performing an
Image, All command), if the Auto Ctr toggle is ON.
2. Identifying reference marks are placed in the center of facets.
This is particularly useful when trying to change the surface normal,
since it permits you to select uniquely identified facets.
3. The limit on the number of points that can be accommodated when
importing a WAV file, was increased to 8000.
4. VGA 256-color and VESA color mapping is done using a 3,3,2 model,
i.e., 3 bits are used for Green, 3 for Red and 2 for Blue. Since
there is not enough resolution (2 bits) for Blue, you might
experience blue patches when rendering an 'almost' gray scale image.
If that happens, select the Gray option in the Render sub-menu.
5. When rendering in 256 colors, the edges are NOT visible regardless
of the setting selected in the Render, Edges sub-menu.
6. The trackball employs an effective 'gimbal lock' mechanism. If the
image is rotated/rolled beyond a 90 degree angle, the Yaw angle
automatically switches by 180 degrees.
7. As the observer distance (D) is reduced, and you move closer to the
center of the image, you will observe some clipping of polygons that
are effectively behind the focal length plane. This normally occurs
at about D=0.5. You might need to render the image to re-orient
yourself.
8. When attempting to print without EMS, the 32k-48k shadow buffer is
used by the Z-buffer model to internally render the image in
horizontal strips. Since the buffer size is limited, the longer the
strip (specified print width) the narrower the vertical strip size
that can be accommodated. When the calculated vertical size falls
below 16 scan lines, the program will not render and will abort the
printing process. This limit will accommodate a 7.5 inch width at
120 dots per inch resolution. Under these conditions, if you want to
increase the resolution, you'd have to reduce the specified print
width. For above example, if you wanted to use 240 dpi resolution,
the specified width should be approximately 3.75 inches.
9. When creating TGA output files, the program requires approximately
300k of EMS to render the image. If it's not available, the TGA
output menu is disabled and an appropriate error message will be
issued.
Modifications in Release 2.00a
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. The {smooth_triangle....} option was implemented for POV output
files, for all mesh type objects on layers 17-32 (spheres,
extrusions, etc.) This results in a smoother transition from facet
to facet using the average sufrace normal of each facet bordering the
vertex. (No such smoothing takes place on layers 1-16).
2. The {bounded_by.....} option was implemented in the POV output
files. This results in a significant decrease in rendering time. The
{composite...} command is now used to group related objects rather
the {object...} command. This was necessary in order to make the
{bounded_by...} command operational.
3. The observer point coordinates, in the POV output file, are now
reflective of the user selected observer coordinates.
4. The observer point coordinates, while viewing an image in ProtoCAD,
are now reflective of the user selected observer coordinates.
5. If you are using later versions of the POV program to ray trace
images created with ProtoCAD, then the +mv1.0 command line switch
should be used (The command structure in the ProtoCAD created files
conforms to ver 1.x of POV - see POV documentation for additional
information).
6. A correction was made to the File, Config, Printer menu, to ensure
that the printer driver selected by the user would stay selected
after the menu was exited.
7. The on-screen "control cube" speed is now controlled by the SPDUP
parameter under the File, Config, Default menu. The default value is
2 which should be fine for most users. Increasing the value speeds
up the control cube movement, while decreasing it to 1 or 0 slows it
down for pin-point viewing accuracy.
Modifications in Release 2.00b
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. A modification was made to correct the EMM386 exception error when
importing a DXF file because of stack overflow. Modules were
rearranged so now stack space available for each call is doubled.
2. A modification was made to the DXF Export module, for 3D entities,
so that the extraneous Type 13 information, required when importing to
AutoCAD, is now added to the exported file.
3. A significant modification was made to the memory management modules
which resulted in the following three modes and appropriate
enhancements.
a. Screen update speed was increased by up to 100% (in wireframe
mode) and by up to 20% when rendering. The actual speed depends
on the specific design, the amount or RAM available, etc. In this
mode, the program consumes more RAM. It should be noted that if
you don't have enough Expanded Memory (EMS), the program can take
up to five six times longer for a screen update, regardless of
the mode yo are in!! It is recommended that at least 2 Mb of
EMS is available before you start the program.
b. If speed is not of importance, but memory is premium, then start
the program with the /MIN command line switch i.e., PC3D /MIN
[ENTER]. (The /MIN switch was not active in earlier releases, but
it IS active NOW.) This would make maximum amount of memory
available to you (MINimize memory usage), at the expense of
screen update slowdown.
c. In earlier versions, memory consumed by placing data into a
buffer during edit operations, was NOT returned to the pool, and
eventually, the user might run out of memory, even though the
model size (# of elements), did not change significantly.
With the new memory module, the memory used for the edit buffer
is freed and returned to the pool when the File, GetInfo command
is executed. However, the option to clear this memory, or not,
is controlled by the user through the toggle FREEMAN (under the
File, Config, Default menu). If FREEMAN is toggled ON, then the
memory is freed every time File, GetInfo is executed.
Modifications in Release 2.00c
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. A modification was made to the DXF Import/Export routines. Since
ProtoCAD uses a different X-Y-Z orientation, in order to avoid
confusion when Exporting/Importing DXF files, Z coordinates are
swapped with Y coordinates so that the resulting DXF file follows the
AutoCAD standard orientation convention.
2. Since latest versions of AutoCAD don't use the 3D Line concept,
but rather the standard Line with X, Y, and Z coordinates, a
modification was made to the DXF Import/Export routines to reflect
that.
3. A modification was made to the routine initializing the disk drives
at startup, so that the initialization now takes only a fraction of
the time.
4. A correction was made to the Edit, Array, Circular, rotate command
to appropriately change the orientation of the rotated object as
specified by the user. Furthermore, when specifying an Edit, Array
operation with a rotation angle, the user is asked to specify a third
reference point (secondary point of rotation) which is the centroid
for the counter rotation of the selected objects.
5. The Grid button status is now updated whether the grid was activated
through the icon or with the menu Grid command.
6. A correction was made to the Xtract, TGA, Script command to avoid a
situation where the System might experience a lock-up if a) OK was
selected without specifying name, b) cancel was selected, c) ESC was
pressed to cancel the dialog box.
7. A modification was made to Draw, Polygon routine to clear the
problem of having to press the right mouse button after cancel had
been selected.
8. A test is now made for degenerated triangles, when exporting to POV.
If such triangles are found, they are not exported to the POV file.
9. A modification was made so that now trimmed elements are NOT
automatically placed on the active layer.
10. Splines now display a vertex mark just like the other elements
created by ProtoCAD,
11. The colors specified under File, Config, Colors, Screen are now
saved with the configuration file.
12. A correction was made to the VESA support module to support line
drawing. In earlier releases, text was not rendered in VESA mode
because there was no line drawing support.
13. The File, New, Units setting, saved in the configuration file, may
now altered at a later time without automatically defaulting to the
saved settings.
Modifications in Release 2.00d
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. A modification was made to the SNAP mode, so that the snap value
assigned to Kz (z-axis) is now utilized by the program properly.
In earlier releases of ProtoCAD 3D, the Kz snap spacing would
default to the snap value assigned to Ix (x-axis), regardless of
the Kz setting.
2. A correction was made to re-enable the mid-point attach option,
which had been inadvertently disabled in an earlier release.
3. The new release of the program does not allow the user to make a
view button selection while in the drawing mode. In earlier
releases, this could give the appearance that the various view
buttons were not working properly, since they would only be
highlighted without actually changing the view.
4. A modification was made to re-enable the plot scaling factor
option available when the selected output device is a plotter.
This feature permits the user to adjust the size of the plot
file created with ProtoCAD 3D.
5. High intensity colors when converted to gray scale (printing
only) would use an incorrect bitmap to represent the half tone
or shading. This has been corrected in the latest release.
