  19. Convair, which is a contraction of Consoldated-Vultee Aircraft, 
  20. was located in San Diego (the home of the Classic Airliner 
  21. Page), and produced the B-24 Liberator and the B-36 Peacemaker, 
  22. among other famous planes.  The Convair-Liner project started 
  23. with the CV-110 prototype, but American convinced Convair to 
  24. alter it into the CV-240.  Convair wanted American's order for 
  25. 50 aircraft, and took a large loss on the order which CR Smith 
  26. eventually allowed to be reduced to allow Convair to sell the 
  27. planes at a profit.  Other US operators included Western, Pan 
  28. Am, Continental, and Northeast.  After the aborted negotiations 
  29. with TWA and Eastern for a "Super 240" (see the 404 section 
  30. above), Convair realized that airlines were not going to accept 
  31. their current offering, and in response to a United inquiry, 
  32. developed a plane very similar to the cancelled Super 240, and 
  33. called it the CV-340.  United took 55, and more US orders came 
  34. from Braniff, Continental, Delta, Northeast, and National.  The 
  35. CV-340 earned an enviable reputation for reliability and 
  36. profitability, and was also popular in South America.  The 
  37. final piston-powered development of the Convair-Liner was the 
  38. CV-440 Metropolitan, which was 5 mph faster and quieter than 
  39. the CV-340.  Although a fine aircraft, most sales were made 
  40. overseas, and especially in Europe.  In the US, Continental, 
  41. National, Braniff, Delta, and Eastern all had small fleets.

  43. Japan Air Lines used the Convair 440 on mostly domestic routes
  44. to connect with international flights at Tokyo.
  45. Usual seating was for 44-50 passengers.
