  44. CBN - the Comic Book Network has just elected a new Network
  45. Administration Team.  Congratulations go out to Walter Tietjen, Brock
  46. Cordeiro, and Jeff Bennett with my personal good wishes for your success
  47. in guiding the network that sponsors this rag!  Long live the NAT!

  49. FIDO - Yours truly has been nominated as moderator of the COMIC book echo
  50. of the Fido Network.  The election begins around June 26, so if you are a
  51. frequent Fidonaut be sure to look for the ballot and do your duty. (Now
  52. if I can just figure out how to stick those bribes into an Email
  53. message.)  *8^)

  55. TV Guide - did you see next week's TV guide yet?   There is a 5 page
  56. comic story that previews the new Hercules comic from Topps with Xena as
  57. a guest star in this one.  Kinda hokey take on the old Robin Hood/
  58. Little John impasse at the bridge gag.

  60. CSN - thought I was just sucking up in my review of Innocent Bystander?
  61. See what Cliff and Brett have to say about it in Comic Shop News #469 and
  62. decide if you might want to see what we are talking about.

  64. Dr. Who - another passing I had not heard about until this week's CBG
  65. showed up.  Jon Pertwee died on May 20 at the age of 76.  Speaking of
  66. CBG, lots of Marvel bashing letters these day AND *don't* read But I
  67. Digress if you don't want to know the secret plot of the movie Mission:
  68. Impossible. I did and I am probably not going to see it now.
  69.  
  70. Calipari - as in U-Mass coach (not suicide squid - that's calamari), is
  71. going pro.  In the words of Gilda (Roseanne Roseannadanna) Radner, "What
  72. do you wanna live in New Jersey for, anyway?"  And the burning question
  73. around here this week is, "would YOU move to New Jersey for 15 MILLION
  74. DOLLARS?"
  75.  
  76. We have Rich Johnston's monthly revelations as well as the CSN top 50 for
  77. you this time.  A final Suspended Animation for now, and a summer fill-in
  78. for J. Torres in our Recommended Reading column.

  80. I'll be getting more time to do my own reviews in another week, and I do
  81. have material from the mail but can't do it justice this time around.  I
  82. do review everything sent to me at the address at the end of the mag, so
  83. you creators and editors who want the exposure we can afford you, send
  84. your work old or new.  Meanwhile, check out this week's issue.

  181. Harbinger.  Torque and Kris (sp?) concieved the child before Torque's
  182. death and the child was born during the Unity crossover.  Thanks to
  183. Solar, he was brought to the future, where he was brought up by the
  184. robot 1A.

  259. Williams-starrer grossed $5 million, landing it in sixth place for the

  264. SAN DIEGO TO HOST LARGEST COMIC BOOK AND POPULAR ARTS CONVENTION IN U.S.

  266.     SAN DIEGO, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The 27th Annual Comic-Con
  267. International, formerly known as San Diego Comic-Con, will take place
  268. July 4-7 at the San Diego Convention Center.  Comic-Con, as it is
  269. affectionately referred, is considered the premier popular arts
  270. convention in the United States.  Officials expect to surpass last year's
  271. attendance of 35,000 people.
  272.  
  273.     In addition to comic books, Comic-Con represents many related popular
  274. art forms including science fiction, fantasy literature, art, film and
  275. television, comic strips, costuming, games, interactive multimedia and
  276. Japanese animation.  The public is invited to visit the hundreds of
  277. booths and displays filling the entire exhibit floor of the
  278. 250,000-square-foot convention center and to attend some of the 11 tracks
  279. of programming on various aspects of the popular arts.

  281.     "Comic-Con truly has something for everyone," says David Glanzer,
  282. spokesperson for the non-profit group that organizes the annual event.
  283. "We have programs on breaking into the exciting comic book business as
  284. well as breaking into film, acting, writing, and even portfolio reviews

  287.     The Convention Center doors will open on Thursday, July 4, at 11:00
  288. a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.  Friday and Saturday hours are 10:00 a.m. to

  290. time programming will be held at the Hyatt Regency and Clarion Hotel.

  293. Pick-up and drop-off services will be available between the Convention
  294. Center and 17 downtown hotels.  Pay parking is also available throughout
  295. the downtown area.

  298. Sunday admission is only $10.  A four-day pass for adults over 60 and

  305. BERT GOULD JOINS MARVEL COMICS AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, MARKETING

  309.               To Join World's Largest Comic Book Publisher
  310.      NEW YORK, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Further solidifying its marketing
  311. and promotion efforts, Marvel Comics Group (NYSE: MRV) announced today
  312. the hiring of Bert Gould to the post of executive vice president.  The
  313. announcement was made by Jerry Calabrese, Marvel Comics Group president.

  315.      Gould, the former executive vice president, marketing, promotion
  316. and program strategy for the Fox Children's Network joins Marvel as
  317. executive vice president, marketing, a newly created post.  At Marvel, he
  318. will oversee all marketing efforts involving the use of Marvel's
  319. extensive library of comic book characters.

  321.      "We are delighted to have Bert join the Marvel marketing team.  His
  322. unique sensibility and style which worked so successfully at the Fox
  323. Children's Network is a perfect match to ours.  He certainly has a firm
  324. grasp on what appeals to our target audience and we look forward to
  325. working with him to take the industry into the next century," Calabrese
  326. said.

  328.      At the highly successful Fox Children's Network, Gould supervised
  329. marketing, on-air and off-air promotions and network scheduling.  He was
  330. instrumental in the creation of a national club for kids that currently
  331. boasts more than 5.4 million members, including a national magazine that
  332. has become the most widely read children's magazine in the United States.
  333. Gould also oversaw the ancillary exploitation of all Fox Children's
  334. Network properties, serving as a liaison to Fox's licensing,

  342. Peter David was at a Babylon 5 convention last weekend (8th June) and he
  343. mentioned that he was planning to change Supergirl, so that she couldn't
  344. keep transforming herself because he felt that it reminded the reader of
  345. the characters non-human nature, and also that she would lose the
  346. ability to become invisible as he considered it far too powerful an
  347. ability.

  355. Archie writer Frank Doyle died of cancer in April; he is credited with
  356. over 10,000 Archie stories and was 78 at his passing. . . HBO, home of
  357. the hit series,"Tales from the Crypt", is planning a new series based on
  358. the EC science fiction comics . . .Curses on FOX TV, they announced they
  359. are moving X-Files to Sunday  AND WORSE , Steven Grant's ENEMY will not
  360. be picked up as a series after all.  The series is being shopped around
  361. so keep your fingers crossed . . .Alan Davis returns to Marvel this fall
  362. to do X-MEN:ClanDestine . . .  Steve Norrington will be directing Wesley
  363. Snipes in the New Line production of BLADE, based on the Marvel comics
  364. Dracula series. . . another crossover in the works for September; would
  365. you believe Brinke Stevens and Blonde Avenger fighting to save the comics
  366. industry? . . . The Kingdom Come trading card series from SkyBox will be
  367. coming in August or September . . . Brendan Fraser has signed for the
  368. title role in the live action "George of the Jungle"!  - I hope Weird Al
  369. does the soundtrack :)

  374. Short revelations this month. Ah, don't hold it against me. Next months'
  375. should be post-San Diego, so there could be loads of stuff to pick up.

  377. Peter David's take on Supergirl will be to address her non-humanity, and
  378. her attempts to be human, not just a Matrix creation. Good news is, we
  379. get to see Gorilla Grodd, as well as Rampage and Chemo
  380.  
  381. Sinisister and Apocalypse team with X-Men to fight Onslaught? You've got
  382. to laugh. Anyway, Age Of Apocalypse returns with Blink being the walking
  383. plot device. Creative teams: XSE- John Ostrander and Carlos Pacheco,
  384. Magneto- Lobdell and Terry Dodson. Quicksilver- unconfirmed. Magneto's
  385. rejoining X-Men. And, yes, it looks more likley that Nate snuffs it and
  386. Scott takes over his book.

  388. Alex Ross may be painting Chris Claremont's Who Gods Destroy Elseworld
  389. mini for DC. Other possible artists include Ariel Olivetti and Alex
  390. Horley.

  392. So which comic company is snapping Frank Quitely up for a creator-owned
  393. series? He certainly getting the offers, but do they know how slow he
  394. is?

  396. Ryan Benjamin's high profile on the multi-title Image crossover,
  397. Shattered Image may cause greater interest in his spotty Image career so
  398. far. Anyone care to volunteer a checklist?

  400. We've seen (and salivated) over the solicitation for Dark Horse's Body
  401. Bags by Jason Pearson, part of their Blanc Noir line. This will be
  402. followed by The Heretic by ex-Axis Joe Philips, Brave by Cully Hamner,
  403. Maximum Velocity by Brian Stelfreeze and No One by.... Adam Hughes.
  404. Thought I'd save the best bit till last 8-)

  406. Now. In this month's Previews, you can order X-Flies Special 2nd print,
  407. as well as X-Flies Conspiracy. Good news huh? But even better is Dirtbag
  408. 7 next month. Now, I've been working hard on this one. Ego time, I know,
  409. but the cover looks fantastic, there are some of my favourite panels and
  410. pages so far, there's more Mark Stafford, Roger Langridge, as well as
  411. some 2000AD creators work. There's also a preview of X-Flies Bug Hunt. It
  412. looks the business, and that's where I need your help.
  413.  
  414. The sales on Dirtbag 7 may easily define whether we keep publishing the
  415. book, or not. Dirtbag will contine, but may be relegated to the back of
  416. X-Flies. I'd just like to see it keep going. You can put your orders in
  417. now for next month. Every retailer will be able to order it. We recently
  418. had a letter from a woman who tried to order X-Flies and was told she
  419. couldn't. She moved her order to another shop, who are ordering 6 copies
  420. for her and her friends. The moral is, if your shop won't order Dirtbag
  421. for you, there may be many other things they won't order for you. Move
  422. while it's not too late.

  437.    His art is seen everywhere, yet few know his name.  His career spanned
  438. the early days of the Disney Studios, the wild '60s animation of Robert
  439. Crumb's FRITZ THE CAT, and the subtle, silent humor of THE PINK PANTHER.
  440. Yet, when recognized at all, Jim Davis is usually mistaken for the guy
  441. that draws GARFIELD in the comic strips.
  442.  
  443.    Jim Davis is NOT that, and much more.
  444.  
  445.    At the very least, he was at two of the right places at the same time.
  446. He was animating SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES and then SUPERMAN (for
  447. Fleischer) when comic books were coming of age.
  448.  
  449.    Having no comic book writers and artists themselves, some publishers
  450. were then supplied with stories by other companies called "shops". Shops
  451. created work for several publishers simultaneously.  Davis was on the
  452. spot.
  453.  
  454.    Without dropping his brush at Fleischer, or Warner Brothers, Davis
  455. began acting as an agent for moonlighting animators and drawing some
  456. material himself for B.W. Sangor Shop, which eventually became the
  457. American Comics Group.
  458.  
  459.    He and his animators drew exclusively for young children, most often
  460. using "funny animals" as their foils for fun.
  461.  
  462.    Only three publishers, Pines, National and ACG, featured Davis' art,
  463. produced for these companies through the Sagnor Shop.  His credits
  464. include "The Fox and The Crow", "Flippity & Flop", "Tito and His
  465. Burrito", "Hound and The Hare" and "Witch Hazel:.
  466.  
  467.    These were published in titles including HA HA and GIGGLE COMICS
  468. (ACG). As the California agent for B.W. Sagnor, he is also indirectly
  469. responsible for dozens of additional features including "SuperKatt" and
  470. "The Duke and The Dope".
  471.  
  472.    His animation work also plays on millions of VCRs worldwide every day.
  473. Of the dozens of features he helped animate, his favorite was THE PINK
  474. PANTHER.
  475.  
  476.    Jim Davis' work is highly recommended.
  477.  
  478.    Some older titles are expensive and difficult to locate.  Price guides
  479. or comics dealers help.  Comic shops, conventions, mail order companies
  480. and trade journals are best sources.  Prices vary, shop around.
  481.

  483. magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has
  484. appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by

  511. (Halloween Comics) 22 pgs. each. $2.95 each. Written by James Hudnall.
  512. Illustrated by Greg Horn. 16350 Ventura Blvd., Suite 351, Encino, CA 91436.

  514. This self-published black-and-white series is a continuation of the
  515. story begun by James Hudnall in the original ESPERS series (from Eclipse)
  516. and the subsequent INTERFACE (from Epic). The story involves a group of
  517. people with paranormal abilities trying to make their way in the
  518. dangerous world. Knowledge of the previous series is not necessary,
  519. though there are trade paperbacks of both available from Caliber.
  520.  
  521. We are introduced to this paranoid world through the eyes of Skye
  522. Lanning, a high school student who has recently developed the ability to
  523. "see" things, such as the history of a person, when she touches objects
  524. (later described as a psychometric ability). And it is this ability that
  525. draws the attention of two separate groups of Espers, each wanting
  526. something different from her.
  527.  
  528. Through the course of the first two issues, Skye is thrown into one
  529. dangerous situation after another as she tries to stay sane and alive.
  530. She meets Linda Williams and some of her group, the Espers from the first
  531. two series. And she meets several people on the other side too, who
  532. aren't nearly as nice.
  533.  
  534. If I'm being a bit vague, I apologize. It gets a little complicated.
  535. That's not to say that it isn't clear, because it is. James Hudnall is a
  536. very skilled writer and his use of Skye to give the reader a birds eye
  537. view to the characters and concepts involved works very well.
  538.  
  539. Greg Horn's art is attractive. He has a very clean style and is a good
  540. storyteller. Not once are you wondering what has happened in a panel and
  541. his characters are easily distinguishable. His only weakness is one of
  542. perspective - he has some trouble with showing depth, though it is not a
  543. consistent problem.
  544.  
  545. There are a few minor problems but I'm sure they will straighten out as
  546. the series goes along. Actually, I'm envious of Hudnall. He is
  547. self-publishing as a writer, something that hasn't been done before, and
  548. the work is of high quality (his upcoming AGE OF HEROES sports John
  549. Ridgway as artist). Get in on the ground floor.

  552. BOOKS OF MAGIC #27
  553. (Vertigo/DC) 24 pgs. $2.50. Written by John Ney Rieber.

  556. There are many who feel a void now that SANDMAN is no more. There are
  557. also many who suggest that BOOKS OF MAGIC is up to the challenge of
  558. filling that void. I agree with the many. I realize that SANDMAN can
  559. never be replaced but its loss is easier because there are series such as
  560. BOOKS OF MAGIC, which has been a quality series for more than two years.
  561.  
  562. This issue, titled "Down with That," is the first issue in a new
  563. storyline, so it's a good time to jump on. The roots of "Rites of
  564. Passage" can be traced back to the previous two issues but there is a
  565. handy summary to bring new readers up to speed.
  566.  
  567. BOOKS OF MAGIC is the story of Tim Hunter, a teenager who has the
  568. potential to become the greatest magician ever. The problem is that he
  569. has no idea what he is doing and therefore tends to fumble his way around
  570. with mixed results. He is joined by a wide variety of characters, most
  571. notably his girlfriend Molly.
  572.  
  573. The new storyline finds Tim in America (he lives in England) in an
  574. attempt to find Zatanna, whom he hopes will become a mentor to him. Upon
  575. arrival he runs into Leah, a model and succubus who appeared earlier in
  576. the series. Not knowing anyone else in the States, he tags along with her
  577. model pals.
  578.  
  579. We are introduced to two white teenagers who want to be gangstas, E.Z.
  580. and O.Z., and two other strange people, Cupid (call him Q) and Psyche
  581. (who changes from a butterfly to a fly girl). Naturally, everyone's paths
  582. cross by the end of the issue.
  583.  
  584. And Molly is in the land of Faerie making a deal with Auberon, who
  585. wishes her to be the fool for the faerie folk. In turn, he will do
  586. anything she asks of him.
  587.  
  588. John Ney Rieber is a wonderful writer. He captures the essence of what
  589. it is to be a teenager, so many joys and new experiences and so much pain
  590. and awkwardness. The relationship between Tim and Molly is written
  591. perfectly, as he illuminates the bumps and bruises that crop up along the
  592. way. And Molly is an absolute treasure. Watch out, you'll fall in love
  593. with her too.
  594.  
  595. Peter Gross's art is quite stylish as well. His characters may be a
  596. little thin but he really does capture that sense of wonder that is magic
  597. and a teenager's often confusing life.
  598.  
  599. So, do yourself a favor and give this a try. A comic that features
  600. hollowpoint bullets with milk chocolate casings can't be all that bad.

  764. [A] How to join the COMIC BOOK NETWORK (CBN)
  765.  
  766. You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
  767. that occur in the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day!  However,
  768. many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
  769. echo-mail system....
  770.  
  771. Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the continent and
  772. the world, many of them are free!  Chances are, if you have a modem you
  773. have the accompanying communications software.  Using the Terminal
  774. Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the
  775. many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs).
  776. Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book
  777. Network...
  778.  
  779. There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
  780. well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
  781. sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms
  782. of entertainment.
  783.  
  784. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer!  Most if
  785. not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK
  786. packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline
  787. mail reader.  You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then
  788. upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS.
  789. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer
  790. system.  They all give you a better explanation in their documentation
  791. than I can.   These programs are available all over the Internet and are
  792. free to download from most BBS's.  I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to
  793. get started.
  794.  
  795. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
  796. replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
  797. average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
  798. LESS THAN $.75!  See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
  799. information services available! :)
  800.  
  801. So what else can you find on free BBS systems?  There are plenty of files
  802. for specific types of computers.  Some systems also offer other types of
  803. message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like
  804. sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc.  And, let's not forget online
  805. games.  Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system
  806. sports different challenges.  There's nothing like becoming the most
  807. powerful being in a online adventure!
  808.  
  809. And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
  810. ALL, and introduce yourself to us!  You're guaranteed to get plenty of
  811. replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
