[1] On the Net by David LeBlanc
IMPORTANT NOTICE: (that's for you guys that skip this but of rambling
for the juicy stuff later on) Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend. I
will make every attempt to have an issue out but it will be later than
usual. I am having company for the weekend and my brother is being
ordained a Catholic priest on Saturday and saying his first mass on
Sunday. Most of the issue is compiled during the week, but lots of final
touch up, the late breaking news, and the posting of changes to the web
page and uploading of files prior to actually mailing out the issue does
not start until Friday night. If I run short of time it will be squeezed
in when I find time over the weekend, and may not be until Monday
afternoon after I get back from the airport. Just so you guys don't
start sending me worried notes about where the next issue is. I am real
proud to have gotten this far with a good on time record, but as I said
when I started the goal here is quality, and enough material to make it
worth your time (and mine).
I now have a new batch of SUSPENDED ANIMATION columns from Michael Vance
to run the next few issues. Joe Torres has his Recommended Reading
column this time around and Matt High's extremely late Top 200 comics
(excluding Marvel) for April finally came out. Speaking of columns, CBN
guru Mike Imboden is near the end of the school year and threatens to
invade these pages with his famous ramblings once again. Speaking of
invasions, Marvel is making a slow start on the World Wide Web with an
Onslaught page, complete with Shockwave movies. You can find the URL in
this issue or just click the ROGUE picture on our Web page LINKS area at
http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet. Speaking of Nintendo (I know we
weren't, just seeing if you are paying attention) the new 64 bit system
will premier the new TUROK video game as a new comic series launches from
Acclaim as well this September.
I am really jazzed by the Kingdom Come series! It is everything I
expected and has a few little touches I hadn't expected. It was my pick
of the week last week and already I am panting for the next issue. THAT
is the sign of a truly good comic, in my book. I also managed to find
some BONE chromium cards from the first series (the only collection of
cards I own) and all I need now is C3, and the 3 card subset as I already
have a medallion card. Anyone got these 4 to sell? Bobb mentions Dr.
Who, and I thought that was a pretty ok movie for tv. Gotta catch the
X-Files tonight. Lois and Clark bothered me, I don't like season ending
cliff hangers.
Not much else to say but be patient next weekend and fire up those
barbecues. I hope I survive it - if you knew my family (5 brothers and 2
sisters and Dad) you would know why I have my doubts.:)

This is beginning to look like the classified ads! Another answer to a
previous question about an obscure book:
Subj: claremont's xmen
Date: 96-05-13 19:49:51 EDT
From: Rembert@aol.com
you had a question in the latest issue about a book called something
like "Claremont's X-men"
In 1994 Marvel had a series of hardcover books in a series of "marvel
limiteds" - print runs were about 500-1500, and I believe the book you
had the question on was one of them. There was a print from George
Perez, a book of Marvel's firsts, a few xbooks, and a Frank Miller
Daredevil hardcover (this last was recalled and replaced, although few
dealers probably got them replaced).
Stores were required to order a certain percentage of all the Marvel
titles, and then had to pay $50-$250 per book, with a limit of two per
store. Finding one may be tough; finding a cheap one is even tougher.
{Thanks Rembert - and a plug for the fine work you are doing keeping
things straight in the Science Fiction/Comic Book area of America Online}
[TRIVIA CONTEST]
Who inspired the character that won the heart of Peter Parker, Mary
Jane Watson?
From: "ADAM B. COHEN" <acohen02@gumedlib.dml.georgetown.edu>
Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 01:13:16 -0400 (EDT)
Mary Jane Watson was modeled after Nancy Sinatra (or should have been)!
[After seeing that Playboy spread, I agree! :)]

>At last one I think I know! Carrie Kelly's whole real name is Carolyn
>Keene Kelly.
> Jason Sacks
>
>Jason was the first to get it and so wins the Cheezy Prize (tm) and a
>bonus Kingdom Come poster to celebrate the event of the year!
>
A question: Where, exactly, was this revealed? I know it's a Nancy Drew
ref, but it's not anywhere in Dark Knight.
[I grabbed this question and answer from an interview by Frank Miller
in a recent issue of Comic Buyer's Guide.]
>According to John Romita, who was Mary Jane Watson modeled after?
Ann Margaret, wasn't it?
Jim, Master of Comics
[yes it was Jim, but you were not the first to get it!
but a regular contestant was:
Subj: Trivia

From: 103514.2754@CompuServe.COM (Jose Mochove, Jr.)
John Romita styled Mary Jane after Ann Margaret. Oh, please tell me I'm the
first person!
Jose
[Jose did make it first and gets the prize!]
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
THIS WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION:
Which seven characters, according to Mike Benton's "The Comic Book in
America", stand out as the most historically significant?
This may take a while for anybody to get so don't think you haven't a
chance if you want to guess late. I'll throw in an extra bonus because
of the length of the answer required.
IMPORTANT RULES NOTICE:
The first correct answer to reach the editor wins the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm).
The editor will be the sole judge as to which guess arrived first!
Please be sporting and send only one guess at a time.
LIMIT: ONE PRIZE PER MONTH PER PERSON!
Submit your own trivia and win the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm) if you stump the
subscribers! You MUST submit the correct answer with the question.

[3] CBN Insider - News, gossip and rumors from around the industry
Wednesday, May 8 - The illustrator of children's classics, "Charlotte's
Web" and "Stuart Little", Garth Williams, died in Mexico at age 84 after
two bouts with pneumonia. Williams also illustrated "Little House on
the Prairie" and "The Cricket in Times Square". In 1958 the book he
wrote and illustrated, "The Rabbit's Wedding", caused some controversy
because it showed a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit.

Mike Baron has revealed that he and Paul Gulacy are doing a new "crime
comic" for Acclaim called "The Grackle". Says Baron, " This was not our
first choice for a title, but we can live with it. A grackle is a small
black bird that nests in larger birds' nests without disturbing them,
sometimes stealing their food. It plays into the story. Paul's art will
give you a nosebleed--he keeps telling me this is the work he was born to
do. And I believe it. It's a John Woo-like roller coaster of a crime
thriller featuring ex-cop Derek Cross, who finds himself caught up in a
gang war in the middle of the New York City mayoral elections. This is
the best thing I've done for Acclaim, although I'm proud of the Magnus
Yearbook Paul Smith and I did, and a handful of Archer & Armstrongs. And
Nexus Meets Magnus, which was a gift from Bob and Steve. BWS is an
extremely difficult act to follow."

Is Marvel ready to jump into cyberspace finally? Elsewhere we detail
the new *official* ONSLAUGHT Web page [ http://www.onslaught.com] that
started up May 13th. Now they have a notice there that a live chat is
planned for Tuesday, May 21st on America Online, 8:00PM - no details yet.
Could it be to launch MARVEL ONLINE, similar to DC Online? Or will it be
as guests of Wizard, which already has an area there? Wait and see.

From this week's CSNsider in Comic Shop News #465, lots of stuff we
already told you about, plus . . .Helm Comics has put BOG, Swamp Demon #s
0 & 1 and ALEXA LYNN #1 on hiatus while they work out problems with the
printer, who has been paid but has not printed the product. . .ROGUE is
the next mutant statue release to a more affordable $150 . . .Pure
Imagination Press is considering a series run of hard to find early Kirby
material in black and white. . . now they say that Batgirl *will* return
in the comics this year (THEY being Comic Shop News) and sparks will fly
with Robin! (BTW this contradicts what Chuck Dixon said recently on an AOL
chat). . .How about a complete run of the Neal Adams X-Men, with state of
the art computer coloring in a trade paperback for $24.95? Look for
"X-Men Visionaries" this summer. . .David Engel has signed to produce Jim
Hudnall and Dan Brereton's "The PSYCHO" in a movie. . . Dave Lapham is
planning a hard cover collection of issues 1-7 of Stray Bullets to be out
this July. . .Marvel is also planning hefty, Manga sized collections of
super hero reprints in black and white at bargain prices. . .a Bizarro
miniseries from DC in 1997. . .Dark Horse is planning to relaunch the
original ALIENS miniseries with a reworked script to fit the current
continuity and this time around in color. . . That MARVEL HEROES one shot
with art by Ditko, Romita and Buscema, has been rescheduled for August
and renamed MARVEL HEROES and LEGENDS. . . TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN gets a
full color special from Adhesive Comics this July.

[4] SUSPENDED ANIMATION by Michael Vance
COMICS LEGENDS
Powerful, bold, dramatic and epic all describe the work of an artist
who became one of the first comic book superstars... backwards.
Before organized comic book fandom or widely circulated publications
about the artform, FRANK FRAZETTA's fame had spread across America by
word of mouth. He was "that unbelievable cover artist" for Robert
Howard's CONAN and Burrough's TARZAN novels.
It was first rumored and then confirmed that he'd also done work for
MAD Magazine and even for the legendary EC Comics during the 1950s. As
the first attempts at comic book history were published, the greatest
thrill of all for comic book fans was discovered; Frank Frazetta had
drawn comic books.
It was a thrill because comic book art was held in disdain by the
same people who loved Frazetta's work. So, there!
Rooted in Naturalism (the artsy term for realistic representation),
Frazetta's cover paintings of barbarians and voluptuous women are
powerful in comparison, bold in color, dramatic in subject and epic in
scale. His exaggerated anatomy, perfect for the fantasy worlds
illustrated, changed the direction of heroic art in comic books and
heavily influenced SF, fantasy and adventure covers for paperback novels
and magazines.
His small but important body of comic book work is no less powerful,
and has been collected and reprinted in many editions.
Frazetta's comics work includes "Snowman" (Baily); "Thundra",
"Straight Arrow", "Tim Holt", "Ghost Rider" (all ME); "Golden Arrow"
(Fawcett); "Shining Knight", "Tomahawk" (both for DC); "Buster Crabbe"
(Eastern Color); crime, horror, fantasy, science fiction and Mad
Magazine (EC); "Creepy" (Warren); and "Forbidden Worlds" (ACG).
His comic strip work includes "Johnny Comet" and "Li'l Abner (as
Capp's assistant). Poster art for movies and a stint as Harvey
Kurtzman's assistant on "Little Annie Fannie" for Playboy magazine all
broadened his career.
Frank Frazetta's work highly recommended.
Some older titles are expensive and difficult to locate. Price guides
or comics dealers can help. Comics shops, conventions, mail order
companies trade journals are some of the best sources. Prices vary;
shop around.
(Mr. Vance is a professional writer having written for numerous
magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has
appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by
Comico, Renegade, Innovation and Rip Off Press. SUSPENDED
ANIMATION appears in 14 publications reaching 214,000 readers
in the U.S., Ireland and Portugal.)

[5] RECOMMENDED READING #5 Small Press Comic Reviews by J.Torres
A FISTFUL OF REBUTTALS
(Homemade Graphics) 48pg. Written by Ron Young and Illustrated by Jeff
LeBlanc. 142 Brentwood Rd., Beaconsfield, Quebec, H9W 4M5.
The cover of this one-shot is an Old West wanted poster which reads:
"...A Lavishly Illustrated 48-Page Western Parody Featuring: High Drama,
Low Comedy, and Two Punchlines". Firstly, yes it *is* lavishly
illustrated. Jeff LeBlanc delivers 96 panels (two per page) of
beautifully rendered snapshots of the Old West. The un-inked pencils are
here reproduced with an effective sketchbook-like, wonderfully crude look
evoking a kind of rustic, dusty atmosphere perfect for this droll Western
yarn. It's a Western all right, featuring an amusing "showdown" between
Gary Cooper look-alike town Marshal Mick Luhan and Off-White Ike the
local bandito with the Clint Eastwood squint and scruff. It's a Western
where no shoot-out occurs and, in fact, the story revolves around an
hilarious debate ("be it resolved that this town ain't big enough for the
two of us") intended to defuse the classic conflict from reaching its
inevitable violent head. Luhan and Ike grunt their deadpan "yup's" and
"nope's" (their "fistful of rebuttals") causing the well-meaning mediator
to sweat some. The tension mounts and is built up rather cinematically,
calling to mind High Noon, with a montage of impressive images cutting
back and forth between the "debaters", the mediator, the watching
townspeople and some nicely drawn Old West scenery. The pacing is
perfect. Ron Young cleverly dashes humour all along the tumbleweed strewn
dirt path leading to the story's laugh-out-loud comical (anti)climax. "A
Fistful of Rebuttals" is inventive and original, showcasing terrific
eye-candy and some truly funny, funny writing. Not to be missed!
ARCANA #5-6
(Wells & Clark) 24pg. Written by T.S. Wells. Illustrated by Rob Clark. 31
Oriole Crescent, Grimsby, Ontario, L3M 3X3.
From what I've gathered from these two issues, the story so far is that
Clorinda, a young adult, is orphaned upon the death of her mother and is
left with no place else to go, with no other family to turn to. She
happens to meet up with a couple of thieves named Foxglove and Flagg,
ends up traveling with them and therein begins the adventure. The three
move from one town to the next (doing so with much haste in #5 after
Foxglove gets into some trouble), discovering a little bit more about
each other along the way. This anthropomorphic series has a Martin Wagner
style about it, coupled with the look of early Cerebus. Action is not the
forte of the book, rather, character study seems to be. There is intrigue
as parts of the threesome's individual pasts are revealed and the plot
thickens and the relationships complicate with each revelation (as in
Clorinda's hand in her father's death revealed in #6). Rob Clark has a
way with facial expressions and serene scenery. The storytelling is
engaging, if not a bit slow-paced, but that's more design than fault.
Perhaps aptly enough, there's a quiet, almost lulling, spell-binding,
inviting way to the storytelling in Arcana. If you're a fan of furry
books, character driven works or detailed, fine line art you should give
Arcana a look.

*Note - Phage #1 was only listed on the Diamond charts for the month, and
does not appear to have been offered through Capital City. Ash #0 was
offered only through Capital City this month; it was offered through
Diamond last year.
NOTES ON HOW THIS CHART WAS CREATED:
Each month, Diamond Distributors publishes a trade publication called
"Diamond Dialogue", which lists the top 300 comics sold by piece count.
Also, Capital City Distributors publishes a trade publication called
"Internal Correspondence" which lists the top 200 comics sold by dollar
value. In March, Antarctic Press had ten items listed on the Diamond
chart, and six items listed on the Capital City chart. Since we know how
well Antarctic Press books sold, it is simply a matter of simple math to
determine what one "index point" equals on both charts. For example, in
the APRIL Diamond Dialogue, Warrior Nun Areala #5 is listed as having an
"Order Index" of 22.0; we sold 15,894 copies through Diamond that month,
so the one index point = 750 comics sold (approx.). (This figure also
holds true for all other Antarctic Press books listed on the charts for
that month).
Unfortunately, the Capital City INTERNAL CORRESPONDENCE stopped listing
per-centage indexes beginning in April, so it is now much more difficult
to estimate sales of comic books through Capital City. However, by using
known sales figures for books on the chart, comparing against where they
rank on the top-200 chart, plus taking into account past issue sales and
proportions it is possible to get a fairly close estimate. However,
sales estimates for some books (particularly those from Kitchen Sink and
Viz) could be off by as much as 10%. Because of this, the Capital City
sales estimates, the rankings, and the proportion of sales in the chart
above should be taken with a small grain of salt.
Using the sales estimates from both Diamond and Capital City (which
represents more than 95% of all sales in the direct market), it is
possible to get a fairly accurate estimate of total sales.
Please note in the month of April that the following publishers are
exclusive through Diamond: DC, Image, Dark Horse, Acclaim, Maximum,
Wizard, Gemstone (Russ Cochran and Overstreet), Broadway, London Night
Studios, Chaos, Crusade, and Brainstorm. For Capital City, Kitchen Sink,
Viz, and Coppervale are exclusive. Also, Marvel Comics is exclusive
through Heroes World Distribution, and the sales figures for Marvel
comics are not readily known, so they have been omitted from this chart.
"Exclusive" means that comics from these publishers are available to the
comics retailers ONLY through the distributor, and from no other source.
It must be stressed that these sales figures only represent pre-orders,
and do not represent actual sell-through sales at comic stores. This
chart also does not include order increases, reorders, or cancellations.
However, order increases and reorders are generally only a very small
fraction of total sales. Also, this chart only represents sales through
Diamond and Capital City Distributors, which combined make up
approximately 95% of the direct market. It does not represent sales
through smaller distributors, such as Hobbies Hawaii, Big Picture, and
Hobby Games, nor does it represent direct-to-retail sales,
direct-to-customer sales, or newsstand distribution sales.

[8] TUROK comes to NINTENDO 64(R) BUSINESS WIRE
E3, LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1996--Gamers will be taken
back to the beginning of time and ahead to the future of interactive
entertainment when Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKLM) releases
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter(TM), its first title for Nintendo's forthcoming
Nintendo 64(R) system. The release date of the game will coincide with
the launch of Nintendo's new 64-bit system on September 30th. Turok:
Dinosaur Hunter features incredible 3-D graphics; 100% computer
rendered, polygonal characters; Acclaim's proprietary motion capture
technology; and first-person perspectives that will provide action and
adventure of tyrannosaurus proportions.
"Turok is one of the most popular characters from Acclaim Comics with
an extensive history and compelling storyline that translates perfectly
into a first-person, action-adventure title," says Sam Goldberg, vice
president of marketing. "The advanced capabilities of the Nintendo 64,
coupled with Acclaim's motion capture technology, will make gamers feel
like they're actually going where no man has gone before."
Turok Hits The `Campaign' Trail
Assuming the role of Turok, gamers set out to stop The Campaigner and
his army of "Bionosaurs" -- bionic dinosaurs -- from controlling time
with a device called the Chronosceptor and taking over the Lost Land.
Only Turok knows that the device is flawed and it will destroy the entire
universe if activated. In keeping with the title's comic book origins,
game play is spread out over nine levels that are organized into three
chapters -- The Plot Revealed, The Ancient Ruins and The Lost Land.
Developed by Iguana Entertainment, the Austin, Texas-based programming
studio of Acclaim, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter offers an array of exciting
features, including:
- 100% computer-rendered polygonal characters, including Dinosaurs,
Bionosaurs, Robot Droids and many other characters from the Turok comic
book universe;
- Fast and furious action from a first-person perspective, including
running, climbing, swimming and fighting;
- Incredible 3-D graphics, which allows gamers to explore their 360
degree environment;
- 100% interactive backgrounds;
- Arsenal of weapons, including the low-tech bow and arrow, to
futuristic tek bow, riot shotgun and grenade launcher, all of which
inflict enemy damage accordingly;
- Various equipment and maps to aid players throughout the game;
- Warp generators Advanced game design, allowing gamers to experience
non-linear action which monitors their progress and provides
opportunities to increase health or weapons at critical times;
- Many hidden power-ups and secret areas.
Acclaim Comic's Turok: Dinosaur Hunter issue No. 1 sold over 1.8 million
copies, which places it among the top ten best-selling comic book titles
of all time. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is based on Gold Key Comics' Turok:
Son of Stone which debuted in the market in the 1950s. In December 1996,
Acclaim will re-launch the Turok comic book series with an entirely new
storyline, enemies and characters. The new series will also include
Turok video game tips and hints.
Acclaim's Turok: Dinosaur Hunter will be backed by an aggressive,
integrated marketing program that includes broad-based print advertising
in dedicated video game, personal computer, youth and comic book
publications; direct mail; in-store retailer support; and on-line
promotions on Acclaim's Worldwide Web site
(http://www.acclaimnation.com). In addition, Acclaim is currently
developing Nintendo cross-promotions and consumer sweepstakes to further
promote the title.
Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. is a leading worldwide publisher of

[A] How to join the COMIC BOOK NETWORK (CBN)
You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occur in the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....
Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the continent and
the world, many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you
have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal
Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the
many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs).
Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book
Network...
There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms
of entertainment.
If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if
not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK
packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline
mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then
upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS.
There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer
system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation
than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are
free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to
get started.
These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)
So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of
message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like
sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online
games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system
sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most
powerful being in a online adventure!
And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!

as well as an annotated index and all back issues. You'll also find
important information on how to join the conversation in the Comic Book
Net, and other neat features like newly released comic book graphics,
links to lists of Comic Book Company addresses, Comic Professionals Email
addresses, and other Comic Book related Web pages!

LOCATING THE ISSUES
-------------------
The latest issue is always available from all the systems linked into The
Comic Book Network. You can also find the back issues at America Online,
by going to Keyword: Science Fiction, scrolling to the menu item _Comic
Book Forum_ and then going to the _Comics Library_ from there. Most issues
should also be available on Compuserve, Genie, Channel1 BBS and Software
Creations BBS as well as other non CBN affiliated Bulletin Board Systems.
All back issues should be available at the above sites, as well as our
World Wide Web page.
SUBMISSIONS
-----------
To submit an article, review, column, etc to our e-mag, simply post it
in any Comic Book Net conference and leave me a message in the
CBN: E-Mag conference giving me permission to use the article. If you
cannot access the Comic Book Net, submit your articles for consideration
to the editor at: ComicBkNet@aol.com
Reviews of mainstream books are least likely to get included when
submitted from sources outside of CBN. We give more consideration
to reviews of indies and self published material as we feel that
material deserves more exposure to the general public.
Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal observations
and reflections related to comics are *most* likely to be included
in our publication.
We also accept product for review purposes. Advanced copies of comic
books will not be returned but anything sent to us will be reviewed in
the ComicBook Net Emag. Send all material to:
David L. LeBlanc
84 Heather Circle
