  1. MAPS.txt ver 7.4a          ALL ABOUT APRS MAPS
  2.  
  3. SUMMARY: There are three other important MAP README's.  
  4.  
  5.    MAPMAKIN.txt describes the format of APRS maps and how to make them.  
  6.    MAPS-CD.txt tells you how to make maps from the USGS CD ROMS.
  7.    MAPS-HST.txt covers how to drive around, save a track history,
  8.                 and then use that track to add to an APRS map!
  9.    ANYxxx.map   APRS maps are DOS TEXT.  Look at one!
  10.  
  11. MAP DISTRIBUTION:
  12.  
  13. The APRS distro disk now includes the basic APRS74.zip file and major
  14. USA maps plus an additional XmapsVV.zip for your area.  The following
  15. MAPLISTS tell APRS which map to use for any given  cursor location and
  16. range.  The default is MAPLIST.USA.  Use the MAPS-CHANGE command to
  17. select the alternate MAPLIST for your area.  To see the boundaries of 
  18. these regions, use the MAPS-ALT command when centered on the USA map.
  19. These are only the ones that I provide.  Numerous states have now 
  20. developed their own lists...

  95. As of Mar 95, I have a total of 290 maps, plus the separate OHIO and
  96. MISSOURI maps.  The total full-up APRS system takes 6.6 megs on my HD. 
  97. (big on a 20MB drive, but trivial on a 250MB drive!

  100. ALL APRS STATE MAPFILES SHOULD CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING RULES:
  101.  
  102. INDIVIDUAL MAPS:  If you make a disk or FILE with individual maps in it,
  103. send it to your state map coordinator and include a piece of paper with 
  104. the exact LAT/LONG/RANGE and insertion instructions so that he can edit 
  105. it into his MAPLIST.  Include instructions on where to insert the new 
  106. map(s) in the heirarchical list.

  109. STATE MAP COORDINATORS:  Please, DO NOT modify MAPLIST.USA, or any of
  110. the standard distribution MAPLISTS.  Their integrity is MY
  111. responsibility.   Also, do not make any changes to MY maps without
  112. CHANGING the map name.   When users unzip your files, there should be NO
  113. FILES in your files that  can unknowingly replace my original distro
  114. files.  I WELCOME your changes  to MY maps, but send them to me (with a
  115. unique name) so that I can be the  one to make the change to the
  116. distribution copy...

  118.      ALL mapnames should begin with your two letter STATE abbreviation.
  119. Consider making the next five characters represent individual counties
  120. or metro areas.  The last character can be N,S,E,W, or any of the other
  121. 26 letters or numbers.  Of course other names like XXneast or XXsouth
  122. are also good for the larger maps.  Your distribution files should
  123. contain ONLY YOUR maps, and NO OTHERS for which you are not responsible.

  125.      Build your MAPLIST.XX to include ONLY your XX state maps and all
  126. larger maps that contain your state all the way up to WORLD.map.  
  127.  
  128.      All XX state map distribution packages should be named consistently
  129. as XXmapsVV.zip, where VV is the version number.  Everyone can use that
  130. list to see the extent of your efforts and responsibility. The version
  131. number lets everyone know whats new, and lets BBS SYSOPS know whats OLD
  132. and can be deleted.

  134.      Distribute interim UPDATE files as XXaftrVV.zip.  This file will
  135. contain all of the NEW maps and changes for state XX, AFTER version VV.
  136.  
  137.      If you want to try to maintain an overall MAPLIST directory which
  138. includes all maps that your users may be interested in, including maps
  139. outside of your area, then name it MAPLIST.xxA.  The xx identifies the
  140. state, but the A on the end clearly identifies it as including ALL that
  141. your users might want. If you have room, you can actually begin with
  142. MAPLIST.USA, add all of your unique maps and save this new list as your
  143. MAPLIST.xxA.  By keeping all the .USA maps in your maplist, then your
  144. local users will still be able to see most of the USA with reasonable
  145. resolution without having to change MAPLISTs.

  147. FINALLY, build your zip file by placing your MAPLIST.XX in a directory
  148. by itself with a SUB directory MAPS that contains all of your maps. 
  149. Then use PKZIP -rp XXmapsvv.zip to zip up your package.  This way the
  150. directory structure is preserved and when the user uses PKUNZIP -d
  151. XXmapsVV.zip, he will get the MAPLIST and the MAPS in the right places.

  153. If we are all consistent in our distribution packages, then the users
  154. will have a lot less troubles...

  157. CAUTION:  When adding MAPS to any MAPLIST.xxx file, the location of the
  158. map in the list is VERY IMPORTANT.  Your new map must go AFTER any other
  159. larger map covering the same area, and BEFORE any smaller maps which
  160. overlap or may be included in your map.  THis includes the edges of
  161. surounding areas and states.  Use the MAPS-HEIRARCHY or MAPS BORDERS
  162. command to see the effect..

  165. I HAVE WRITTEN A PROGRAM CALLED MKmapLST.bas which will scan a given
  166. directory and will BUILD a maplist from the data in the files.  This
  167. list will NOT be in the proper heirarchical order, but can be used with
  168. an editor to cut and paste together a list for your area.  I dont think
  169. this program will ever need to be used by the average user.

  171. It simply reads the map CENTER coordinates in the various MAP files and
  172. builds a simple list of them.  If SOMEONE would like to add to this
  173. program to give it the intelligence to properly overlap the heirarchical
  174. structure, PLEASE DO SO!

  177. COMMERCIAL MAP MAKERS:  I would encourage anyone that has the time and 
  178. the energy to consider going into business making APRS maps for hire.  
  179. Since APRS maps are intended for the public domain, do not expect to get 
  180. per-copy fees or royalties, but there should be many HAM clubs or groups 
  181. that might like to HIRE you to make a map for them.  I think there is a
  182. BIG market out there for people that need maps.  Again, this is NOT  to
  183. commercialize APRS maps, but simply to make available expertise where 
  184. needed.  If you are going into this business, please contact me.  John
