rnr: Frequently Asked/Answered Questions and Important Tidbits
:: what happened to rusnews?
I just changed the name. I'm no longer the sole author, and the
old name was stupid anyway.
also, rnr sounds like the English `r and r', for `rest and relaxation'.
:: how much does rnr cost?
nothing. I already have a job, and don't want another one.
plus, my insurance would go way up if I used this computer for
money-making. enjoy.
:: why can't I... or how can I... or how do I...
check the `?=help' screens on both the browser and selection screens
(or look at the source in rnrselb.pas). if you still can't find a
key to do what you want, and it's not mentioned in the rnr.fut
todo list, send me mail. the worst I can do is say I don't have time.
:: why haven't you taken ... from the todo list and done it yet?
it might be because I didn't have any time. or maybe it's
because I'm not interested in it, and I didn't know anyone was
really hyped for it. send me mail.
:: why, when I only read one article out of 10, does rnr later
tell me that there are no new articles? I can still get to them
with <G>oto <a>ll.
this is a limitation of the `join' file format, which tracks only
the highest number of news that has been seen. if the one article
you saw was article 10, articles 1 through 9 are also marked as
read by implication. if you use --make-space-like-x, even if you
only read article 1, the `10' will still be put in your join file.
:: why, sometimes after I've read a group, and go back into it, there
are `new' articles shown which I've already seen (I think)?
do you have --make-space-like-x in your rnr.rc file? if you read
articles 1 and 3 in a group which has 1 through 5, the next time you
go through you'll be presented with 4 and 5 (but not 2) unless you
either press shift-x or use --make-space-like-x.
:: why, when I hit `N' does it bring up articles even when I didn't
select any?
you had some antikilled - just hit `N' again (to jump to the next
group) and everything will be fine. it's hard to guess (when `N' is
hit) if I should act on it or not when there's been no non-antikilled
selection. anyway, hitting `N' the second time is usually easy enough
to do since your fingers are right on those keys anyway
use --warn-auto-antikill if this is a problem
:: why do I see my own posts?
if you don't want to see someone's posts, put them in your killfile.
with crossposting, Followup-To:, multitasking systems/networks, and
the join file format, stripping them out any other way would be
impossible to implement (in a way other than just killing all your
articles, but the killfile already does that)
:: why do I see replies before the questions?
a few possible reasons: waffle's rnews is broken (in regards to
continuation lines), thus stripping References: data, thus resulting
in news not being ordered correctly. or the subject line might
have changed on the reply, making it appear to be in a different
thread entirely (which then got displayed before the thread in which
the question was asked). or the space-saving in the threading data
might have caused an inaccurate ordering due to hash collisions.
also, people who have software that trims Subject: lines at 25 chars
(QWK comes to mind, but there are others!) don't help either.
some people's software change the Subject: line when posting followups
(by changing ` ' to ` ', say), and that also hurts.
:: why can't rnr find my news?
make sure you aren't using the old FORUM lines in your forum set files
- it was last used in v1.63 of waffle. use the new DEFAULT lines.
:: why does rnr die right after `columns: 80' is printed?
try running it with --ignore-mouse
:: why does rnr say every article is from `(could not read file)',
with the same thing for a Subject:, but I can read the articles fine?
try running it with --no-filemode
:: why doesn't <G>oto <f>aq select anything?
maybe all the FAQs posted to that group have expired. or maybe the
group's FAQs aren't yet crossposted to news.answers .
:: in what newsgroup is it polite to discuss rnr?
comp.bbs.waffle, comp.os.msdos.mail-news, or possibly both. but if
you want to make sure I see a question, mail it to me. with rnr
itself, you can do this by adding a line that says
`CC: Russell_Schulz@locutus.ofB.ORG' up in the headers,
like right after the Newsgroups: line.
:: does it really frost you when people leave out an `l' in `Russell'
or the `h' in `Schulz' or add a `t' somewhere?
yeah.
:: why don't you capitalize the first words in your sentences?
for speed.
I just got used to typing that way a long time ago. I still obey the
other capitalization rules, though.
