  1. Hints to setup your ZyXEL U-1496 
  2.  
  3. Here are some guidelines to help you setup your ZyXEL
  4. modem and software.
  5.  
  6. 1.   High speed modems operate differently from the 2400
  7.      buds and lower speed modems.  Because of data
  8.      compression and error correction functions, the actual
  9.      communication speeds between the telephone line and
  10.      the modem and between the modem and your
  11.      computer are quite different.  In most cases, setting
  12.      your software to communicate at the modem speed is
  13.      not enough.  We recommend you to set your software
  14.      at speed of 38,400 or 57,600Kbps if you have 16550
  15.      UART. (ZyXEL U-1496B Internal model has a 16550
  16.      UART)

  18. 2.   All the ZyXEL U-1496 series have the capability of
  19.      auto handshaking which would adapt to different
  20.      speeds.  In most cases, it will talk to 1200, 2400, 9600,
  21.      14400 buad modems without changing the settings. 
  22.      Therefore, we advise you to set your communication
  23.      software at fixed 38,400 or 57,600 Kbps. and turn
  24.      "Auto Buad Rate Detect" off.

  26. 3.   Most communication programs let you select different
  27.      communication speeds for each entry in the dialing
  28.      directory.  For high speed modems, we suggest you
  29.      revise the speed of all entries to a fixed 38,400 or
  30.      57,600 Kbps.  This is the speed your computer will talk
  31.      to U-1496, and the U-1496 will then decide which
  32.      speed it should communicate with the modem at the
  33.      other end.

  35. 4.   Most communication programs use the result message
  36.      which the modem returns to the software when
  37.      connection was made to determine the speed of the
  38.      communication.  Since the "Auto Buad Rate Detect"
  39.      has already been turned off the "Result Message"
  40.      settings in software is no longer important.  We
  41.      suggest you to keep "Connect" only in the result
  42.      message setting section of your communication
  43.      software.

  45. 5.   Flow control is very important in high speed modem
  46.      communications.  We suggest you use "Hardware Flow
  47.      Control" or "RTS/CTS Flow Control" with ZyXEL
  48.      U-1496, since it is the most efficient and is also the
  49.      manufacture default setting.

  51. 6.   When you first start up the modem please make sure
  52.      to issue a command, "AT&F" to your ZyXEL U-1496
  53.      prior to doing anything else.  This will reset the modem
  54.      back to manufacture default setting.

  56. 7.   We have developed drivers for some popular
  57.      communication software.  You can log in to our BBS at
  58.      886-35-787045 to find out if we have the drivers for your
  59.      communication software.  If you are unable to find the
  60.      driver please leave a message for our SYSOP. It is
  61.      possible, we might be able to have the driver ready
  62.      for you within a week.
