- Foreword
-
- Thank you for taking the time to look at my product. If you find any
- bugs, problems, or can not get it to work properly with your system, please
- contact me and I will help you with your initial installation. I am trying
- to make installing this as painless as possible, so just read along and
- try to comprehend. I know I don't write the best Docs in the business, but
- I try. Again, if needed, I can be reached at ShadowRift BBS (Number & other
- info at end of document). Thanks again and Please Register!
-
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- The Ultimate File Download Counter will edit Descriptions in PCBoards
- DIR files, adding the line 'Times Downloaded: XX' to the end of a files
- description. XX is the number of times that particular file has been
- downloaded from your system.
-
- Having this line telling your users how many times a file has been
- downloaded is very useful. It allows them to instantly know which files
- are popular, and usually, the better quality of files. It also helps you
- out in deciding which files are decent enough to stay on your system. (If
- a file has been on your board for over 6 months and hasn't been downloaded
- once, it's probably a safe bet that no one would get upset if you deleted
- it to make way for new files.)
-
-
- PROGRAM FEATURES
-
- - Automatically senses new downloads since last time UFDC was run.
-
- - Reads any size DOWNLOAD.TXT and DIR files.
-
- - Counts up to 30000+ Downloads on one file. [REGISTERED VERSION]
-
- - Able to be run during your nightly event. [REGISTERED VERSION]
-
- - Helps users decide which programs are worth downloading.
-
- - Handles up to 25 directory files in the Unregistered version.
- (Registered versions handle up to 100, but this limit can be
- easily raised - It was arbitrarily set at 100.)
-
-
- REGISTERED AND UNREGISTERED VERSIONS
-
- UFDC is NOT Freeware. Unregistered versions are 30 day evaluation
- copies only. After that time they should either be removed from use or
- registered. Registration is only $15 U.S. Dollars so please Register
- your copy today! See 'REGISTER.DOC' for more information.
-
- REGISTRATION BENEFITS
-
- - UFDC will run in a batch file, allowing you to run it in your nightly
- event. (The way it was really meant to be run! With No Sysop
- intervention or THOUGHT!)
-
- - UFDC will only count up to 10 on each file in your database. In
- the registered version, this limit is removed.
-
- - UFDC is limited to work on 25 DIR files in the unregistered version.
- This limit is raised to 100 in the Registered version. (If you
- need this raised further, it's very possible. Just let me know!)
-
- - Free technical support Via ShadowRift BBS (3 Nodes - Jax., Fl)
-
- - Lifetime free updates of all future versions
-
-
- If this all sounds like a good deal, please fill out the registration
- form and make your check or money order payable to:
-
- Paul Taylor
- P.O. Box 26190
- Jacksonville, Fl. 32226-6190
-
- If all goes well, within 3 weeks you should receive a disk in the mail.
- You can, however, download your registered version from ShadowRift BBS. We
- recommend that you call and let us know your registration is on its way so
- that way we can post your registered version as soon as we receive the
- registration. If you have a valid FIDO net address, please let us know and
- we can send it to you directly if you have no objections. (Personal checks
- will require about a week to clear the bank)
-
-
- Disclaimer
-
- UFDC is distributed as is. There are no warranties, expressed
- or implied. By setting up and running UFDC, you are releasing
- Paul Taylor and ShadowRift BBS from any liability for any damage that
- may occur by the use or misuse of our programs.
-
-
-
- How UFDC Works:
-
- UFDC reads your DOWNLOAD.TXT file, and scans through each directory
- file that you specify. As it finds the files in your DIR files, it will
- copy your directory files up to the point of the last file it found, and
- once it reaches the end of the file, it will copy the remaining portion of
- your DIR file to this temp file, then copy the temp file over your DIR file.
- It's that simple!
-
-
- UFDC & Networks!
-
- UFDC has no problems running on Networks as long as ALL nodes are DOWN
- while UFDC is running. This ensures that no user will attempt to access
- the DIR files while UFDC is trying to access them. Sure, if you are going
- to sit there and run it manually, you can make sure that no one is in any
- of your file areas and run it, but be careful! - It could corrupt your DIR
- files!
-
-
- INSTALLATION
-
-
- Step 1 : Make the directory UFDC and it's associated files
- will reside in.
- Step 2 : Unzip the UFDC archive in that directory.
- Step 3 : Enter your PCBSetup and Write Down the FULL paths
- and Filenames of up to 25 of your more popular directory
- files. (Such as C:\PCB\MAIN\UPLD)
- Step 4 : Find and record the location of your DOWNLOAD.TXT file.
- Step 5 : Edit your UFDC.CFG file - Make sure to add your
- location of your DOWNLOAD.TXT file and all of your
- DIR files you want updated and edited.
- Step 6 : BackUp and DELETE your DOWNLOAD.TXT File. If you would
- prefer, you can backup your Download.TXT file and then
- copy the last few hundred lines out of it into another
- file, rename it DOWNLOAD.TXT, and then run UFDC.EXE.
- I suggested against this with previous versions, but
- version 1.7 is so much faster, it will only take 10-15
- minutes as most, most likely.
- Step 7 : Thats It! Just Run UFDC.EXE every few days and it will
- automatically update your DIR files with the
- "Times Downloaded:" line.

- Other Files Written By Paul Taylor
-
- The Ultimate File Request Door - This door allows users to post
- requests for files that they need in an organized way. It
- allows other users to put up replies to these requests to
- let the original requester know information such as if it
- is already on the system or other such helpful comments.
- The request is removed when another user uses the option
- of fulfulling a request. It is distributed under the filename
- UFRD100A.ZIP and is available for FREQing from (1:112/63)
- under the magic name REQUEST.
-
-
- Known bugs and anomolies
-
- To my knowledge, there are no bugs in this version. It has underwent
- extensive Beta testing, but that only prooves that it will work on at least
- one type of system. In the rare (heh) event that you do discover a bug,
- please to the following:
-
- 1. ZIP up the OLDDLS.TXT file in your UFDC directory.
- 2. ZIP up the affected DIR file.
- 3. If possible, send the programs output to a text file, such as:
- UFDC > BUG.TXT - so that I can see exactly what happened in your
- situation.
- 4. And add to those two files a text file explaining what the
- problem is, including the filename (for easy access on my part!)
- 5. Upload all these files to ShadowRift (#'s listed below).
- 6. Leave private mail to me, Paul Taylor, & I'll try to get
- the problem fixed as soon as possible!
-
-
- Possible Future Features of UFDC
-
- 1. A Log file that would record the activities of UFDC. This is useful
- for bug reports as well as it's very informative for the sysop!
- 2. Color! Not only could the local side be spruced up, but the remote
- side could be as well - The line tha says Times Downloaded : X
- could be a separate color for those users who have ANSI enabled,
- thus setting off UFDC's purpose even more!
- 3. Actually, there isn't a 3 as this time, but I am always open to new
- ideas for features.. If there's a feature you'd like, let me know!
-
-
- Other UFDC Features
-
- UFDC can also operate in a DOOR mode, whereby you can have a co-sysop
- run it on their own and get it's output over the modem, thus they can monitor
- the programs output at their leisure. WHY anyone would want to do this is
- beyond me... Once you get UFDC up and running, just register & put it in your
- batch file. If anyone wants operate UFDC in DOOR mode, you can though. All
- you got to do is download UFRD100A.ZIP from Shadowrift or where ever you can
- find it. The command line options from UFRD100A are exactly the same as they
- are in UFDC. One problem though is that UFDC does NOT auto-detect LOCAL
- mode correctly on some systems....

- UFDC was written in Turbo Pascal 6.0 using parts of Andy Mead's BOI
- 2.00 door writing routines. UFDC has been alpha and beta tested
- at ShadowRift BBS. Special thanks go to Ernie Jackson of Virtual
- Dimension BBS for assisting me in tracking down a major bug! Also thanks
- to Chet Wilkinson of TSUNAMI! In Jax, Fl. for helping me Beta test 1.9

- Custom Programming
-
- If you have some custom programming job you would like done, just contact
- me at any of the above places. I don't have an over abundance of time right
- now, but I always tend to make time for projects that catch my interest.
- In fact, both UFRD and UFDC were custom programming jobs. My fees for
- custom programming are very reasonable. It mainly depends on the time it
- takes me to do the project & what I think it's worth. I do, however, reserve
- the right to distribute any of my programs, with minor changes to them, as
- Shareware products. Also, the price of the program will also depend heavily
- on how well I think the program would sell to other users.
