- GETTING STARTED
- Requirements:
- The following hardware configuration is required.
-
- 386 IBM type machine - A 286, 386, 486 but an AT will also work.
- Color Monitor - Not required but the flashing colors will <T><T>attract a lot of
- attract attention and sell shareware products.
- 5¼" 360K Floppy - A drive - A 1.2meg will also work as well
- 3½" 720K Floppy - B drive - A 1.44 meg will also work as well <T><T>well
- DOS 5.0 - No substitutions - DOS 5.0 MUST be in the DOS directory
- Hard Disk - 40meg for 100 programs - 80meg for 200 programs
- Disk Cleaning Kit - Clean heads a least twice a month depending on use.
-
- TASK THAT NEED TO BE DONE:
-
- 1. Install the program on the hard disk.
-
- 2. Run the SETUP program by entering SETUP and Enter
-
- 3. If you are entering your own disks into the library you'll also
- have to run the EDITOR program by entering EDITOR and Enter. If you
- choose to use the FreeBooter(tm) preloads this will not be necessary.
-
- INSTALLATION
-
-
- Start out with a clean hard disk. You should have only DOS on the
- hard disk and a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT batch file program. The
- DOS programs MUST be in the directory called DOS.
-
-
- The INSTALL batch program must be run to install the program
- onto the hard disk. Place the disk in drive A and proceed as
- outline below.
-
-
- Transfer the computer to the A drive by entering the following
-
- A: followed by Enter
- INSTALL A C followed by Enter
-
- Enter INSTALL A C, If you wish to place the program on the C drive
- or INSTALL A D if you wish to place the program on the D drive.
- Follow your entry by pressing the Enter key.
-
- The original disk will then install itself on either the C or D
- disk drive automatically
-
-
-

-
-
- SETUP & REGISTRATION
-
- The SETUP program must be run before the main program will
- function.
-
- Transfer the computer to the C drive by entering the following
-
- C: followed by Enter
- CD\ followed by Enter
- SETUP followed by Enter
-
- The first screen allows you to select the Registration module or
- the Setup module. If you are already registered, go directly to
- the Setup by using the left arrow key, then press Enter.
-
- If you are registering the program, just press Enter.
-
-
- SETUP
-
- The Setup module will start when the SETUP push button is selected.
- Setup consists of a series of questions that need to be answered so
- the Software will be aware of the machines' configuration and will
- run properly. If you are a novice, Freebooter(tm) will be happy to
- assist you in the setup and registration procedures. Call: (503)
- 244-4800 - 9AM to 5PM Mon-Fri.
-
-
- Question #1
- Color Monitor - Answer this with either Y for yes or N for no.
- We strongly recommend a color monitor. The colors are eye catching
- in the idle scramble screen and will attract considerable atten-
- tion.
-
-
- Question #2
- How many floppy disks - Answer this with 1 or 2.
- We strongly recommend two drives - one 5¼" and one 3½".
-
- Question #3 A & B
- This is a pop-up, so you may select the size of the floppy disk in
- drive A and drive B. Know what they are - don't guess. The
- program requires absolute knowledge of the disk size. This is
- necessary, in that, the format call will be different for each
- selections. There are four possible selections 5¼" - 360K,
- 5¼ - 1.2MB, 3½" - 720K, and 3½" - 1.44 MB.
-
- The A drive selection will come up first. Use the arrow keys to
- place the highlight over the correct selection and then press the
- enter key. If you have a B drive also, the selection will repeat
- itself again. You know which drive you are selecting by the title
- at the top of the small pop-up menu.
-
-
-
-
- (2)
-
-
-
- IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT as to which size disk drive you currently have,
- exit the program by pressing ESC and try to format the floppy disk
- using the FORMAT command. To format the A drive, enter the
- following:
-
- CD\DOS followed by ENTER
- FORMAT A: followed by ENTER
-
-
- If you're trying to format the B drive, substitute B for A. The
- computer will then try to format the disk at it's highest value.
- When complete, it will display the format capacity. You will then
- be able to select 360K or 1.2MB for 5¼" disks and 720K or
- 1.44MB for 3½" disks. If the computer tries to format the
- drive and you receive a lot of errors, you are trying to format a
- low density disk with a high density drive. In that event, you
- know that you have either a 1.2MB 5¼" drive or a 1.44MB
- 3½" drive.
-
-
- Question #4
-
- Charge for Copying - Answer Y if you plan to charge for copying the
- disks or N if you do not. If you answer N, this will complete the
- SETUP procedure.
-
-
- Question #5
-
- Charge by Program or Disk - Several programs consist of multiple
- disks. Most of the programs are single disks but some can be two
- or more. You need to make the decision whether to charge by the
- program or by the disk. If you select PROGRAM, the copy charge
- will be applied to the whole program as one unit. If you select
- DISK, the copy charge will be applied to each disk in the program
- copied.
-
-
- Question #6
-
- What is the charge - Answer with any figure up to $7.00. Some
- shareware authors restrict the copying charges to no more than
- $7.00. We recommend a charge of from $1.50 to $2.60.
-
- When the final question is answered, the program will proceed to
- start the software.
-
-
-
-
-
-

-
- REGISTRATION
-
- When the registration button is selected, one of two things will
- happen.
-
- 1. Registered users - Your registration number will be displayed.
- When you press Enter, the FreeBooter(tm) Software product display will
- come up. Pressing Enter again will start the software.
-
- 2. Un-registered users - The program is prompting you for the
- registration password. To obtain the password, call FreeBooter(tm) on
- either (503) 244-4800 or (800) 366-4012 between 9AM and 5PM Mon-Fri
- (Pacific Time). The cost is $89.95. We accept VISA or Mastercard.
- (Sorry, No American Express or Discover). We will then record your
- registration number and give you a password to activate the
- software immediately.
-
-
- Following registration, FreeBooter(tm) will send you and updated
- program that has been registered especially to your company. The
- header frame that appears in the scramble screen mode will display
- your registration number and the store name and city. Please note,
- this is non-transferable without the specific written permission of
- FreeBooter(tm) Software.

- SOFTWARE JUKEBOX
-
- Enter JUKEBOX to start the FreeBooter(tm) software.
-
- NOTE: Special pass keys associated with the software:
-
- Alt - F9 Resets the charging totalizer.
- The totalizer will also reset after six minutes when the
- Jukebox returns to the attention getting scramble mode.
-
- Alt - F10 Returns the program to the DOS level.
- The program can not be interrupted by using the
- Cntl-Break key combination.
-
- It is best to keep these key combinations to yourself.
-
- Once started, the ■scramble■ screen activates for 5 seconds, then
- stops for 15 seconds to display the FreeBooter(tm) Software screen,
- the registered users registration number, business name and
- location. This repeats until the customer presses F1 to activate
- the working portions of the Jukebox.
-
-
- Pressing F1 during either the "scramble" or when the trademark
- screen is displayed will pass the user on to the working part of
- the program. If you are running an unregistered program, the
- screen will display a copyright infringement notice next. Since
- the unregistered program is not authorized for commercial use, only
- store owners or their technical people will be viewing this screen.
- Once registered, this screen disappears. Unfortunately, there are
- a few that would put the program into commercial use without
- registering. For this reason, we have taken these precautions.
-
-
- In the main program, the customer has three choices. To REVIEW,
- FORMAT or COPY. This is selected by pressing the first letter
- (e.g. C for Copy), or using the arrow keys to select the choice and
- then pressing the Enter key, or using the mouse and press the left
- hand button.
-
- REVIEW
-
- Review allows the customer to read the on-line program description.
- Pressing R, or selecting Review by using the arrows keys and then
- pressing Enter or by selecting Review with a mouse and pressing the
- left hand button, will switch the active screen to the program file
- listing. Use the up-down arrow keys to scroll the screen through
- the
- available program listings. Once the highlight bar is over the
- desired program, press the Enter key. You can also use the mouse
- on the sidebar indicator to scroll through the listing.
-
-
-
-
-
- (5)
-
-
- Once the program is selected, the description pop-up screen will
- display a complete description of the program.
- This synopsis will include a description, up to nine lines, the
- registration price, and the necessary computer configurations to
- run the program.
-
-
- Pressing any key will restore the screen back to it original
- configuration.
-
-
- FORMAT
-
- Format allows the customer to format a new or used disk. Pressing
- F, or selecting Format with the arrows keys and pressing Enter, or
- by selecting Format with a mouse and pressing the left hand button,
- will switch the active screen to the program file listing.
-
-
- Format function will format a new disk, ready for copying. The
- program description, tells the customer the number of disks that
- are necessary to copy the entire program. The customer should
- format the number of disks indicated. Easy to follow, on screen
- instructions, guide the user through the formatting procedure. If,
- while in the copy procedure, the customer find he or she has not
- formatted enough disks, the program will automatically default to
- the format command.
-
-
- The formatting of the disk is controlled by the values that you
- placed into the Setup program. Make sure that these values are
- correct. Trying to format a 360K disk with 720K command does not
- work.
-
-
- You'll need to stock 5¼" 360K and 3½" 720K blank disks.
- DO NOT USE HIGH DENSITY DISKS. The program does not expect them
- and the formatting controls will not function with these disk
- values. Note: High density disks are more expensive to use.
-
-
- Once formatting is selected, the program prompts will ask if you
- have two disk drives and which disk you wish to format. Select the
- proper disk drive with the arrow keys and press the Enter key.
- Once selected, the program drops to the DOS level and runs the
- standard format menu that everyone is familiar with.
-
-
- When all the disk(s) are formatted, respond N to the question,
- Format Another. This switches the program from DOS and places the
- customer back in the original screen, ready for copying.
-
-
-
-
-
- (6)
-
-
- COPY
-
- Copy allows the customer to copy the program from the hard disk to
- the floppy. Pressing C, or selecting Copy with arrows keys and
- pressing Enter, or by selecting Copy with a mouse and pressing the
- left hand arrow key, will switch the active screen to the program
- file listing. Use the up-down arrow keys to scroll the screen
- through the available program listings. Once the highlight bar is
- over the desired program, press the Enter key. You can also use
- the mouse on the sidebar indicator to scroll through the listing.
-
-
- Once selected, the program will display a pop-up selection asking
- which drive to copy. Make the proper selection with the arrow keys
- and press Enter.
-
-
- At that time, the program will drop to the DOS level and expand the
- compressed program from the hard disk to the floppy. If the
- program is a multiple disk program, the program will prompt the
- customer to insert a second disk.
-
-
- If the customer is copying a program on to a 3½" disk and the
- program is a single disk program, the software will inform them
- that they still have additional room for added copies. If added
- programs are placed on that disk, it will make a new directory on
- the 3½" drive, switch to that directory, and then copy the
- program.
-
- Totalizer
-
- When the copying is completed, and if you (the store owner) have
- selected a Y for charge for copying, the program will add the
- copying charge into the totalizer. The totalizer will continue to
- tabulate the charge as additional copies are made by the customer.
- The totalizer resets in the following two ways.
-
- 1. Press Alt-F9
- 2. The main screen will stay active, without input, for six
- minutes. At that time it automatically resets the totalizer and
- returns to the scramble screen.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- (7)
-
- PROGRAM EDITOR
-
-
- The Editor program is a separate program and starts by entering
- EDITOR.
-
-
- The main screen, to the left, has the hard disks current selection
- of programs. There are six functions on the menu, Add, Delete,
- Quit, Edit, Install, and Update.
-
-
- ADD
-
- This function is used for two reasons:
-
- 1. You wish to add your own library of programs into the Jukebox.
- 2. You wish to add few programs into an existing library.
-
-
- A complete library is available from FreeBooter(tm) Software in
- multiples of 50 programs up to 200 programs. These are all the top
- selling programs in the shareware field. Please Call FreeBooter(tm)
- for details
-
-
- This function allows you to place a new program disk description
- into the database. Once placed in the data file, it will automat-
- ically sort alphabetically by the program name. Pressing A, or
- selecting Add with the arrows keys and pressing Enter, or by selec-
- ting Add with a mouse then pressing the left hand button will
- switch the active screen to the Add screen pop-up.
-
-
- The first entry is the disk number. Any three digit entry will
- work as long it is not a duplicate of a three digit entry already
- in the database. When you enter a number, the program will verify
- whether the number is already in use.
-
-
- The next entry is the program title. Keep in mind, the computer
- will sort by the first letter. Programs that start with ■The■
- should be entered without that PREFIX. For example:
- ■The Bible■ should be entered: Bible - King James.
-
-
- Quality is the next entry. We recommend the star method
- * Okay program, worth the money
- ** Better
- *** A Good Performer
- **** One of the Best
- ***** A Trophy Winner
-
-
-
-
-
- (8)
-
- The program requirements are next. You may have to abbreviate some
- items to get them all in. For example:
-
- EGA Monitor, Hard Disk, 512K of RAM
-
- could be abbreviated:
-
- EGA - HD - 512K
-
- Registration is the next entry. This is the price shareware
- authors require to register their product. ENTER THE AMOUNT WITHOUT
- THE DOLLAR SIGN.
-
-
- Number of disks in program is the next entry. Many programs have
- more than one disk. When placing multiple disk programs onto the
- hard disk with the installation command, it will add the suffix
- A,B,C, etc. For example: PC-Write has four disks. If you enter
- PC-Write as disk 376, the installation program would archive those
- four disks on to the hard disk as, DISK376A, DISK376B, DISK376C,
- and DISK376D.
-
-
- Put in which directory is an available entry for the convenience of
- the user. This entry is not required.
-
-
- This function allows the user to make a directory name other than
- the one automatically issued by the software.
-
-
- As the software has already done the job for you, we recommend that
- you leave it blank. Placing an entry in this space will install
- the program in a separate directory. This will just cause
- confusion later on. Keep it simple - leave it blank.
-
-
- The next nine lines are devoted to program description. You need
- not use all the lines, but a complete description enhances program
- sales.
-
-
- When describing a program, do not exaggerate its quality or effec-
- tiveness. This will only discourage customers from coming back.
- There are many shareware programs in the field that are, in terms
- of the shareware distributors, ■spitware■. Spitware defined:
- limited or ineffectual programs. If you start loading the Jukebox
- with ■spitware■ you can forget about profits. There are many
- excellent commercial-quality shareware programs on the market.
- Stick with them!
-
- Review each program thoroughly before putting it on the software.
-
-
- Using the Esc key, at anytime, during the entry procedure will
- terminate the entry and a pop-up Save, Redo, Cancel frame will come
- on.
- (9)
-
- Pressing S or Enter when the SAVE is highlighted or centering the
- mouse on Save and pressing the left button will save the new entry
- in the database. Redo, returns you to the top of the entry screen.
- Cancel, dumps the entry into the wastebasket.
-
-
- DELETE
-
- This function allows you to delete a program and its program disk
- description from the database. Pressing D, or selecting Delete
- with the arrows keys and pressing Enter, or by selecting Delete
- with a mouse and pressing the left hand button, will switch the
- active screen to the program file listing. Use the up-down arrow
- keys or the page up/down keys to scroll the screen through the
- available program listings. Once the highlight bar is over the
- desired program, press the Enter key. You can also use the mouse
- on the sidebar indicator to scroll through the listing.
-
-
- Once you have activated the program file listing, if you change
- your mind and decide not to delete an entry, press Esc. This will
- return you to the main menu.
-
-
- QUIT
-
- This function allows you to exit the program. Pressing Q, or
- selecting Quit with arrows keys and pressing Enter, or by selecting
- Quit with a mouse and pressing the left hand button, will switch
- the program to the DOS level.
-
- EDIT
-
- This function is similar to the Add function with few exceptions.
- It allows you to edit the program disk description in the database
- Pressing E, or selecting Edit with arrows keys and pressing Enter,
- or by selecting Edit with a mouse and pressing the left hand
- button, will switch the active screen to the program file listing.
- Use the up-down arrow keys or the page up/down keys to scroll the
- screen through the available program listings.
-
-
- Once the highlight bar is over the desired program, press the Enter
- key. You can also use the mouse on the sidebar indicator to scroll
- through the listing.
-
-
- Pressing Esc at this point will return the program to the main
- menu.
-
-
- When the pop-up screen comes up, it will contain all the infor-
- mation that has been entered into the database for that particular
- program. At this point, follow the description in the Add function
- for editing the program description.
-
-
- (11)
-
-
- When the cursor is at the entry points in the Edit screen, it will
- appear at the end of the typed line. You can, at this point, start
- typing a whole new entry line. It will replace the entry that is
- currently there, or you can use the arrow keys to arrive at a
- correction point and enter the correction.
-
-
- INSTALL
-
- This function allows you to install a program from the A drive.
-
-
- Before using this function, the program will have to be added to
- the description database. The reason for not integrating the Add
- and Install is, occasionally you may be placing updates of an
- existing program into the library and it may not be necessary to
- change the program description in the database.
-
-
- Place the disk you wish to install into the library in the A drive.
-
-
- Press I, or select Install with the arrows keys and press Enter, or
- select Install with a mouse and press the left hand button to
- switch the active screen to the program file listing. Use the
- up-down arrow keys or the page up/down keys to scroll the screen
- through the available program listings. Once the highlight bar is
- over the desired program to install, press the Enter key. You can
- also use the mouse on the sidebar indicator to scroll through the
- listing.
-
-
- At this point, if you only have a single disk, the installation
- process is totally automatic. The program will take the disk
- number you have assigned in the program description file and use
- that number to make the final compressed version of the program to
- store onto the hard disk.
-
-
- Once started, the program will transfer to the DOS level and the
- program in drive A will go through a two step compression process.
- The compression process is supplied and copyrighted by Mr. Haruyash
- Yoshizaki.
-
- If the program consists of more than one disk, you will be prompted
- to place the second, third, and so on disk in drive A for
- installation.
-
- UPDATE
-
- The Update push button is used for FreeBooter(tm) files updates.
- Unless you have received the update from FreeBooter(tm), this push
- button has no function. If you have received an update, the
- instructions for using this push button will be enclosed in the
- update package.
-
- There is a trademark pending on the name Software Jukebox.
