- Welcome to FIELD GENERAL! FIELD GENERAL is a professional
- football simulator programmed for IBM computers and compatibles
- with CGA. A hard disk is needed to unpack and run this software.
-
- The executable files, data files, and documentation files
- for this version of FIELD GENERAL have been archived so they
- would fit on the 360K, 5 1/4 inch distribution disk. These files
- are archived in the self-extracting file "ARCHIVED.EXE". By
- typing "archived" at the system prompt, the FIELD GENERAL files
- will be UNarchived. Simply follow the instructions for
- installing FIELD GENERAL on a hard disk to ready the game for
- play.
-
-
- INSTALLING FIELD GENERAL ON A HARD DISK
- _______________________________________
-
- 1) Create a directory on the hard disk for the FIELD
- GENERAL football simulator by using DOS's "md"
- command.
-
- 2) Copy the files "ARCHIVED.EXE" and "PRT_UTIL.EXE" into
- the FIELD GENERAL directory you just created by using
- DOS's "copy" command.
-
- 3) While in the FIELD GENERAL directory, unarchive the
- FIELD GENERAL files by typing "archived" at the system
- prompt.
-
- 4) Delete the file "ARCHIVED.EXE" using DOS's "del"
- command.

- DOCUMENTATION AND OTHER TEXT FILES
- __________________________________
-
- ASP.doc - the Association of Shareware Professionals'
- Ombudsman Policy.
-
- General.doc - the User's Manual.
-
- General2.doc - the Supplement to the User's Manual. This
- documentation is only included with registered
- versions of FIELD GENERAL. (See file
- "REGISTER.DOC" for details on this file).
-
- Read_me.now - unpacking and installation procedures.
-
- Register.doc - Registration and User Response forms.
-
- Example1.txt - this is the "GAME_LOG.TXT" file from a completed
- FIELD GENERAL game. We have provided this file
- as an example of what FIELD GENERAL will produce
- for each game played. Notice how the results
- resemble those from actual professional football
- games!
-
- Example2.txt - this is an example of the "TOPSTATS.TXT" file
- which will be generated upon completion of a
- regulation length, FIELD GENERAL game. View this
- file to see the extensive list of game records
- FIELD GENERAL keeps for you!
-
- Example3.txt - this is an example of a TTS (Tendency Tracking
- System) report. This report is available for
- both participating teams at halftime and at the
- end of each game. The TTS report for the home
- team will be the file "HOME_TTS.TXT" and the TTS
- report for the visiting team will be the file
- "OPP_TTS.TXT".
-
- Plays.txt - the list of defensive and offensive plays you may
- choose from while playing this version of FIELD
- GENERAL.
-
- Shr_ware.doc - an article on the Shareware marketing concept.
-
- Virus.doc - "Computer Virus Myths".

-
- FILES NEEDED TO RUN FIELD GENERAL
- _________________________________
-
- Cursor.com - changes the system cursor. The cursor will
- remain changed even after a game of FIELD GENERAL
- has ended, but will go back to normal once the
- system has been reset.
-
- Scr_melt.com - this dandy, little utility clears the computer
- screen by making the characters look like they're
- melting away! On some IBM compatibles, this
- program has caused the system to hang. If this
- happens to you, simply reboot the system and
- remove this file from the directory you're
- running FIELD GENERAL from. The system will
- output the "BAD COMMAND" error message when FIELD
- GENERAL tries to run "SCR_MELT.COM", but other
- than that, the game will function perfectly well.
-
- Texas.com - the halftime show. This file can be replaced
- with another "COM" file so you may run a halftime
- show of your choice. If you replace this file,
- be sure to name the new file "TEXAS.COM".
-
- General?.dat - the data files used to determine play results.
- There should be 6 of these files.
-
- Football.exe - this program puts up an opening screen while the
- main program is being loaded into memory and also
- calls "CURSOR.COM" to change the system cursor.
- FIELD GENERAL may be started via this program or
- via "GENERAL.EXE". The only difference between
- the two is the opening screen and cursor change.
-
- General.exe - rbm software's FIELD GENERAL version 5.0
- professional football simulator.
-
-
- OTHER EXECUTABLE FILES
- ______________________
-
- Archived.exe - this file contains all the FIELD GENERAL files in
- archived form. Run this file to UNarchive these
- files. This file may be deleted once all FIELD
- GENERAL files have been properly UNarchived.
-
- Prt_util.exe - FIELD GENERAL print utility. Use this program
- to print any FIELD GENERAL documentation or text
- files. This utility must be present in the same
- directory as that of the file to be printed.
-
-
- FILES NOT PRESENT ON YOUR FIELD GENERAL DISK
- ____________________________________________
-
- Topshort.dat - the data file containing game records for short
- games. This file is used to generate the file
- "TOPSHORT.TXT" and is created by the file
- "GENERAL.EXE".
-
- Topstats.dat - the data file containing game records for
- regulation length games. This file is used to
- generate the file "TOPSTATS.TXT" and is created
- by the file "GENERAL.EXE".
-
- Game_log.txt - this file is updated throughout the game to give
- you a log of game highlights and statistics.
- View this file at the completion of a game. This
- file is created by the file "GENERAL.EXE".
-
- Home_tts.txt - this file is created at the end of each game to
- give you a report on the home team's play calling
- tendencies during the most previously played
- game. This file is created by "GENERAL.EXE".
-
- Opp_tts.txt - this file is exactly like "HOME_TTS.TXT" except
- it gives you a report on the visiting team's play
- calling tendencies.
-
- Topstats.txt - this file is updated at the end of every game to
- give you a listing of all-time game records for
- regulation length games. View this file at the
- completion of a regulation length game to see if
- your team has set any records! This file is
- created by the file "GENERAL.EXE". (See the
- section "ALL-TIME GAME RECORDS" in the User's
- Manual for more information).
-
- Topshort.txt - this file is like the file "TOPSTATS.TXT" except
- it lists the all-time game records for short
- games.

- -- HOW TO BEGIN PLAY --
- _________________________________________________________________
-
- Naturally, the first thing you should consider doing is
- reading the documentation on FIELD GENERAL, file "GENERAL.DOC",
- because there are many facets to this game. However, if you
- don't want to take the time to read all the documentation and
- would like to start by simply seeing what the game basically
- does, do the following:
-
- 1) Be sure you have read the description for the file
- "SCR_MELT.COM", listed above. This description contains
- important information which may pertain to you and your
- computer system.
-
- 2) Make sure the hard disk you are running the game from
- has some extra memory, about 40K, so FIELD GENERAL can
- create seven more files during execution.
-
- 3) Run the FIELD GENERAL print utility program,
- "PRT_UTIL.EXE", to get printouts of any FIELD GENERAL
- documentation files you wish to read.
-
- 4) Read the short sections "ABOUT FIELD GENERAL" & "QUICK
- START" in the User's Manual, file "GENERAL.DOC".
-
- 5) Type "FOOTBALL" at the system prompt to begin play.
-
- We hope you enjoy our game!
