- A Cruise of the Internet
- Version 2.0 for IBM-DOS and DOS compatibles running Windows

- WHAT IS IT?
- Merit's "Cruise of the Internet" is a computer-based tutorial for new
- as well as experienced Internet "navigators." The Cruise will introduce
- you to Internet resources as diverse as supercomputing, minorities,
- multimedia, and even cooking. It will also provide information about the
- tools needed to access those resources.

- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
- This tutorial will run on any IBM-DOS or DOS-compatible computer which
- is equipped to display 256 colors at an aspect ratio of 640 x 480. To
- run the Cruise tutorial you will need:

- - An IBM-DOS or DOS-compatible computer
- - XGA- or XGA-compatible adapter set to display 256 colors at 640 x 480
- - Microsoft Windows(TM) version 3.1
- - Approximately 1.5 MB of disk space
- - 2 MB RAM minimum
- - Internet connectivity and software that does file transfers via FTP.

- HOW TO INSTALL IT:
- The following directions will install the Cruise in the WINDOWS directory
- on your C: drive and as an icon in the Applications Window.

- 1. On your PC type:
- cd c:\windows
- 2. Use Anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to obtain the directions
- (this file) and the Cruise (in binary format):
- ftp nic.merit.edu
- username: anonymous
- password: guest
- ftp> cd resources
- ftp> get merit.cruise2.win.readme meritcrz.txt
- ftp> binary
- ftp> get merit.cruise2.win.exe meritcrz.exe
- ftp> quit
- 3. Start Windows by typing "WIN" at the DOS-prompt.
- 4. Open the Applications window.
- 5. Click on the File option in the Program Manager window.
- 6. Click on New.
- 7. In the New Program Object window, click the Program Item
- button, and then on OK.
- 8. In the Program Item Properties window, fill in the boxes as follows:
- Description: Merit's Cruise 2.0
- Command Line: meritcrz
- Working Directory: c:\windows
- and then click on OK.
- 9. A movie projector icon with the label "Merit's Cruise 2.0" should
- appear in the Applications window. To run the Cruise, double-click
- on the icon.

- Note: If you do not have Internet connectivity from your PC, you may
- still be able to acquire the Cruise. Talk to your local support staff
- to determine if other machines on your campus have FTP capabilities and
- a way to transfer binary files to your PC.

- DISTRIBUTION:
- You may copy and distribute the Cruise without charge. You must
- include the MERITCRZ.TXT file with the Cruise and you may not charge
- any fees for the distribution of the Cruise.

- A version of the cruise for Apple Macintosh II, LC, and Quadra computers
- is also available for Anonymous FTP from nic.merit.edu in the same directory.
