- 1.0 Overview
- *************
-
- This document establishes the policy for SysOps who are members of the
- CrossNet network of electronic bulletin board systems.
-
- CrossNet is defined by a NodeList issued weekly by the
- Zone Coordinator, Jim Rhodes.
-
-
- 2.0 Introduction
- *****************
-
- CrossNet is a amateur electronic mail system. As such, all of its
- participants and operators are unpaid volunteers.
-
- CrossNet is not a common carrier or a value-added service network and
- is a public network only as much as the independant nodes may
- individually provide public access to the network on their system.
-
- The Crossnet network is a publicly accessible tool for communicating
- messages, opinions and ideas over great distances. Each message
- released through the CrossNet network has the potential to convey its
- information to thousands of people in a relatively short period of
- time.
-
- Because the Crossnet network utilizes inexpensive PC hardware and
- software resources and standard telephone lines, it is easily
- accessible to a large number of sports and hobby enthusiasts.
-
-
- 3.0 Primary Goal
- *****************
-
- The primary goal of CrossNet is to provide a crosslink between
- amateur electronic mail systems that use PCRelay echomail software
- and amateur electronic mail systems that use Fido Technology Standard
- echomail software.
-
-
- 4.0 Amateur Electronic Mail Networks Supported
- ***********************************************
-
- MediaNet(tm) A network dedicated to the Broadcasting Industry
- RaceNet(tm) A network dedicated to MotorSports
- RFNet(tm) A network dedicated to Ham and Short Wave Radio
- CrossNet Pets! A network dedicated to Pets
-
-
- 5.0 History
- ************
-
- CrossNet(tm) started on mid 1992 in order to provide a crosslink
- between RaceNet(tm) USA & RaceNet(tm) Europe and to allow systems
- with FTS mailers to access the RFNet(tm) network.
-
-
- 6.0 How to Join
- ****************
-
- To become a CrossNet network BBS you will need to run a "front-end
- mailer" as specified times of the day, each day, for the receipt of
- NETMAIL and ECHOMAIL. Some systems run the mailer for 24 hours a day
- (CM, or Continuous Mail systems), and some folks run it only as
- required (only to send and pick up mail at specified times of the
- day). The most popular BBS mailers are FrontDoor, Binkleyterm,
- InterMail, and D'Bridge, though there are a few others as well.
-
- As a CrossNet SysOp, you will have a little added responsibility. You
- may have to police your echo areas to ensure that they are being used
- properly, in accordance with the particular echo's rules, and if you
- carry any restricted access echos, then you must ensure that only the
- people authorized to be there have access to it. In CrossNet the
- administration echo is CROSSNET and is restricted to CrossNet RC,
- NET HOST, and NODE SysOps only.
-
- To be assigned a CrossNet node address, fill out the application form
- APPLY.DOC found in the CrossNet.ZIP information file and send it to
- the ZONE COORDINATOR (ZC), REGIONAL COORDINATOR (RC), or NETWORK
- COORDINATOR (NC) in your geographical area. You will then be assigned
- a CrossNet node address and a HOST system to connect to.
-
- Contact your HOST system and request their procedures for AREAFIX, the
- automated echomail area reauest process, and also for setting up a
- SESSION PASSWORD if they require it.
-
- Please note that a NETWORK COORDINATOR, HOST system, or
- REGIONAL COORDINATOR SysOp my request financial assistance with
- Echomail Recovery Costs. The Echomail Recovery Cost is based on the
- long distance phone charges devided by the number of participating
- boards.
-
- * Each CrossNet system will display the words CrossNet(tm) in their
- origin line in all of the CrossNet echo areas.
-
- Sample Origin Line:
-
- CrossNet(tm): BBS Name, ###-###-####, (73:####/#)
-
-
- 7.0 Echomail Message Standards and Operating Procedure
- *******************************************************
-
- Common sense is basically all that is required. Each BBS SysOp will
- be responsible for the content of the messages echoed from their
- users.
-
- Each user is expected to exercise common sense, be courteous to
- others, and keep messages posted to the topic of the echo area. Any
- user that disrupts a conference in the network may be reprimanded as
- seen fit by the system that they are communicating through or the
- Zone Coordinator. It is expected that each individual on the network
- behave in a proper and courteous manner and will settle any disputes
- in a kind and forgiving fashion.
-
- There are no hard and fast rules of conduct, but polite behavior is
- expected.
-
- * Thou shalt not excessively annoy others.
-
- * Thou Shalt not be too easily annoyed.
-
-
- 8.0 CrossNet(tm) Echo List
- ***************************
-
- The CrossNet echo areas are provided "AS IS" with no claims regarding
- their usefulness or functionality.
-
- Each SysOp is responsible for the messages entered through their
- node. Each user on the network is solely responsible for the content
- of the messages that they enter.
-
- The CrossNet Network, Network Coordinators, Regional Coordinators,
- and Zone Coordinator will not be liable for any misuse, damage, or
- illegal activity initiated by any user or SysOp on the CrossNet
- network.
-
- You, the user, accept full responsibility and liability for any
- problems or damages associated with the use of the CrossNet network.
-
- All Network Coordinators, Regional Coordinators, and node SysOps are
- encouraged to work out all situations or disagreements originating on
- their nodes.
-
- Situations that cannot be handled by affected RCs, NCs, or nodes
- shall be referred to me, Jim Rhodes in the CrossNet(tm)
- Administration conference or via NETMAIL.
-
- A listing of available echo areas is posted in the file C-ECHO.LST
- in the CROSSNET.ZIP information package.
-
-
- 9.0 NodeList Coordinators
- **************************
-
-
- ZONE COORDINATOR (ZC)
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The Zone Coordinator, Jim Rhodes 73:200/0, oversees the operation of
- the entire CrossNet network. He also coordinates the CrossNet
- echomail areas and crosslinks.
-
- The Zone Coordinator compiles the nodelists from all the regions in
- the zone, and creates a master nodelist and difference file, which is
- then distributed all systems in CrossNet.
-
- All Nodelist additions, deletions, or changes should be sent to
- the Zone Coordinator no later that 18:00 each Thursday.
-
- Nodelist Keyword: ZONE
-
-
- REGIONAL COORDINATOR (RC)
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- A region is a well-defined geographic area containing nodes that are
- combined into networks. A Typical region will contain many nodes in
- many networks.
-
- The Regional Coordinator accepts nodelist additions, deletions, and
- changes from the Network Coordinators in their region. These are
- compiled to create a regional level nodelist, which is then sent to
- the Zone Coordinator by Thursday of each week for inclusion into the
- CrossNet nodelist.
-
- The Regional Coordinator is usually the "Super Regional HOST' for
- their geographic region.
-
- The Regional Coordinator is appointed by the Zone Coordinator.
-
- CrossNet Regions are defined in the Epilog section of the CrossNet
- nodelist.
-
- Nodelist Keyword: REGION
-
-
- NETWORK COORDINATOR (NC)
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- A network is a collection of nodes in a geographic area usually
- defined by an area of convenient telephone calling.
-
- The Network Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the list of
- nodes for their network, and for forwarding echomail to and from
- their network nodes.
-
- The Network Coordinator maintains a list of nodes in their network and
- sends network level nodelist additions, deletions, or changes for
- their network to the Regional Coordinator for inclusion into the
- regional nodelist.
-
- A Network Coordinator is appointed by the Network Coordinator or the
- Zone Coordinator.
-
- Nodelist Keyword: HOST

-
- 10.0 RFNet(tm) Network Echo Area Rules and Guidelines
- ******************************************************
-
- The following are rules and guidelines set forth by the
- RFNet administration. These rules are to be followed in
- the RFNet echo areas.
-
-
- RFNet(tm)
- Official Conference Rules and Guidelines
- Updated: 4/1/92
- ======================================================================
-
- Abusive Behavior
- ----------------
-
- No abuse of other users will be tolerated. Do not abuse
- the other users of the conferences by sending abusive,
- foul, or insulting messages. No abuse of other users on
- the basis of character, physical characteristics, religion,
- gender, sexual orientation, intelligence quotient, or
- ethnicity is allowed. Messages meant to harass or bully
- another users are not allowed.
-
-
- BBS Advertisements
- ------------------
-
- Please do not post BBS ads except for BBS phone numbers
-
- within a message to advise recipients of a contact telephone
- number.
-
- Your BBS number is usually included in your network tagline
- this will suffice as a acceptable BBS advertisement.
-
-
- For Sale Advertisements
- -----------------------
-
- For-Sale ads are not allowed in any conference other than
- the Trading Post conference. We have no objection to
- Conference participants advertising the desire to purchase,
- actual sale or trade of equipment as long as, it is a item
- that is related to Amateur Radio or Shortwave Listening.
-
- Please state in the ad as much pertinent information as
- possible. The ad must include a price, (or swap
- requirements) and contact information (phone number with
- area code, address, or Home BBS routing information).
- Please limit all replies to such ads to routed messages
- and/or direct the message to the originator's BBS whenever
- possible. Also, please send a message when the equipment is
- no longer available for sale/swap.
-
- No implied sale, trade, use or modification of illegal
- equipment.
-
- The conference host or Network Committee shall make the
- determination as to any questionable item posted for sale
- that is not related to the hobby.
-
- All transactions are between the seller and the purchaser.
-
- The RFNet(tm) Network, National Network HUB SysOp, Network
- Administrators, HUB, or NODE SysOps will not be held liable
- for any claim for purchased items usefulness or functionality.
-
-
- Commercial Advertisements
- -------------------------
-
- Please note that any and all commercial advertising is
- *Prohibited* UNLESS YOU HAVE PRIOR WRITTEN PERMISSION from
- the National HUB SysOp, Jim Rhodes or a RFNet(tm)
- administrator.
-
-
- ANSI Code In Messages
- ---------------------
-
- No ANSI messages of any kind. Please do not post ANSI
- graphics in messages. Many users on the network are
- using computers that are not ANSI compatible. ANSI
- graphic charactors will look like line noise on their
- screens.
-
- Signature Lines
- ---------------
-
- Signature lines should be limited to two lines. Remember, a
- signature line is an informative line - include some useful
- information about you, your home QTH (city/state/country),
- and call sign.
-
- Enforcement
- -----------
-
- The enforcement of these rules, as well as the "keeping of
- the peace" in the conferences, is the sole responsibility of
- the conference hosts and the National RFNet(tm) HUB
- SysOp. Please do not interfere with the Conference Host
- job. Do not take the law into your own hands. If you
- have a complaint, criticism or gripe, send a routed
- receiver only message to the conference host or
- to Bob Shuck in the RFNet Administration conference.
-
-
- 1.0 Echomail Software Configuration
- ************************************
-
-
- All CrossNet systems need to have their zone 73 ID set up in their
- mailer, tosser/scanner, and BBS software. This is necessary to
- avoid conflicts in the software between networks and avoid problems
- that may induce duplicate messages.
-
- Please use CrossNet(tm) in your origin lines for each conference.
-
- Please set up your software to display your CrossNet(tm) alias ID in
- each conference.
-
- Sample Origin Line:
-
- CrossNet(tm): BBS Name, ###-###-####, (73:####/##)
