Irish nationalist organization, founded 1840
by William Smith O'Brien (1803-1864), who
attempted an abortive insurrection of the
peasants against the British in Tipperary in
1848. O'Brien was sentenced to death, but
later pardoned. Young Ireland was formed in
rejection of the nonviolent policies of
Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association.
