  1. A silver-white hard metal, symbol V, atomic
  2. number 23, atomic weight 50.94. It occurs in
  3. the rare minerals vanadinite and patronite;
  4. its chief use is in alloying steel to which
  5. it imparts toughness, elasticity, and tensile
  6. strength. It was discovered by Spanish
  7. mineralogist Andres del Rio (1764-1849) 1801,
  8. and isolated by Henry Rosco 1869. Vanadium
  9. compounds (vanadates) are used in the
  10. preparation of aniline black for colouring
  11. glass. The element is named after Vanadis, or
  12. Freya, the Scandinavian goddess of love and
  13. beauty.
