province, on the Pacific; population (1987)
279,000. Founded 1536, it was occupied by the
English naval adventurers Drake 1578 and
Hawkins 1595, pillaged by the Dutch 1600, and
bombarded by Spain 1866; it has also suffered
from earthquakes.
