Amsterdam, on the Kromme Rijn (crooked Rhine)
area 1,330 sq km/513 sq mi population (1988)
965,000 capital Utrecht towns Amersfoort,
Zeist, Nieuwegeun, Veenendaal products
chemicals, livestock, textiles, electrical
goods history ruled by the bishops of Utrecht
in the Middle Ages, the province was sold to
the emperor Charles V of Spain 1527. It
became a centre of Protestant resistance to
Spanish rule and, with the signing of the
Treaty of Utrecht, became one of the seven
United Provinces of the Netherlands 1579.
