Anglo-Saxon kingdom that covered NE England
and SE Scotland, comprising the 6th-century
kingdoms of Bernicia (Forth-Tees) and Deira
(Tees-Humber), united in the 7th century. It
accepted the supremacy of Wessex 827, and was
conquered by the Danes in the late 9th
century. Influenced by Irish missionaries, it
was a cultural and religious centre until the
8th century with priests such as Bede,
Cuthbert, and Wilfrid.
