  1. Nicotine (C10H14N2), is an alkaloid 
  2. (nitrogenous compound) obtained from the 
  3. dried leaves of the tobacco plant Nicotiana 
  4. tabacum and used as an insecticide. A 
  5. colourless oil, soluble in water, it turns 
  6. brown on exposure to the air. It is the 
  7. component of cigarette smoke that causes 
  8. physical addiction.
