Nicotine (C10H14N2), is an alkaloid
(nitrogenous compound) obtained from the
dried leaves of the tobacco plant Nicotiana
tabacum and used as an insecticide. A
colourless oil, soluble in water, it turns
brown on exposure to the air. It is the
component of cigarette smoke that causes
physical addiction.
