  1. In US history, programme introduced by
  2. President F D Roosevelt 1933 to counter the
  3. depression of 1929, including employment on
  4. public works, farm loans at low rates, and
  5. social reforms such as old-age and
  6. unemployment insurance, prevention of child
  7. labour, protection of employees against
  8. unfair practices by employers, and loans to
  9. local authorities for slum clearance. Many of
  10. its provisions were declared unconstitutional
  11. by the Supreme Court 1935-36, and full
  12. employment did not come until World War II.
  13. The Public Works Administration was given
  14. $3.3 billion to spend on roads, public
  15. buildings, and similar developments (the
  16. Tennessee Valley Authority was a separate
  17. project). The Agricultural Adjustment
  18. Administration raised agricultural prices by
  19. restriction of output. In 1935 Harry L
  20. Hopkins was put in charge of a new agency,
  21. the Works Progress Administration (WPA),
  22. which in addition to taking over the public
  23. works created something of a cultural
  24. revolution with its federal theatre,
  25. writers', and arts projects. When the WPA was
  26. disbanded 1943 it had found employment for
  27. 8.5 million people. The New Deal encouraged
  28. the growth of trade-union membership, brought
  29. previously unregulated areas of the US
  30. economy under federal control, and
  31. revitalized cultural life and community
  32. spirit. Although it did not succeed in
  33. restoring full prosperity, it did bring
  34. political stability to the
  35. industrial-capitalist system.
