  1. Queen of France from 1774. She was the
  2. daughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria,
  3. and married Louis XVI of France in 1770. Her
  4. reputation for extravagance helped provoke
  5. the French Revolution of 1789. She was tried
  6. for treason in Oct 1793 and guillotined.
  7. Marie Antoinette influenced her husband to
  8. resist concessions in the early days of the
  9. Revolution, for example, Mirabeau's plan for
  10. a constitutional settlement. She instigated
  11. the disastrous flight to Varennes, which
  12. discredited the monarchy, and welcomed
  13. foreign intervention against the Revolution,
  14. betraying French war strategy to the
  15. Austrians in 1792.
