A map is a diagrammatic representation of an
area, eg: part of the Earth's surface or the
distribution of the stars. Modern maps of the
Earth are made using satellites in low orbit
to take a series of overlapping stereoscopic
photographs from which a three-dimensional
image can be prepared. The earliest accurate
large-scale maps appeared around 1580.
