  4. led the struggle for independence against the
  5. Syrians in the 2nd century BC. Judas (died
  6. 161) reconquered Jerusalem in 164 BC, and
  7. Simon (died 135) established its independence
  8. in 142 BC. The revolt of the Maccabees lasted
  9. until the capture of Jerusalem by the Romans
  10. in 63 BC. The story is told in four books of
  11. the Apocrypha.
