  3. population (1983) 476,000, and of Khartoum
  4. North, across the Blue Nile, 341,000.
  5. Omdurman is also a suburb of Khartoum, giving
  6. the urban area a population of over 1.3
  7. million. It was founded 1830 by Mehemet Ali.
  8. General Gordon was killed at Khartoum by the
  9. Mahdist rebels 1885. A new city was built
  10. after the site was recaptured by British
  11. troops under Kitchener 1898.
