  18. Russian control in the 18th century.
  19. Inhabited by the traditionally nomadic, but
  20. now largely settled, Kazakh people, it joined
  21. the USSR and became a full union republic in
  22. 1936. It was the site of Khrushchev's
  23. ambitious `Virgin Lands' agricultural
  24. extension programme during the 1950s, which
  25. led to overcropping and harvest failures
  26. during the early 1960s, but a so to a large
  27. influx of Russian settlers, turning the
  28. Kazakhs into a minority in their own
  29. republic. There were riots in the capital
  30. 1986 from nationalist anti-Russian sentiment.
  31. In June 1989 four died in inter-ethnic
  32. violence in the oil town of Novy Uzen.
