Fibre obtained from two plants of the genus
Corchorus: C. capsularis and C. olitorius.
Jute is used for sacks and sacking,
upholstery, webbing, twine, and stage canvas.
In the fabrication of bulk packaging and
tufted carpet backing, it is now often
replaced by synthetic polypropylene. The
world's largest producer of jute is
Bangladesh.
