A device used in `superchips' (large and
complex integrated circuits) to speed the
passage of signals by a phenomenon called
`electron tunnelling'. Although these
superchips respond a thousand times faster
than the silicon chip, they have the
disadvantage that the components of the
Josephson junctions operate only at
temperatures close to absolute zero. They are
named after Brian Josephson.
