  2. Indo-European language family, the most
  3. direct descendant of the Roman form of Latin.
  4. Broadcasting and films have standardized the
  5. Italian national tongue, but most Italians
  6. speak a regional dialect as well as Standard
  7. Italian. The Italian language is also spoken
  8. in Switzerland and by people of Italian
  9. descent, especially in the USA, Canada,
  10. Australia, the UK, and Argentina. The
  11. standard language originates in the Tuscan
  12. dialect of the Middle Ages, particularly as
  13. used for literary purposes by Dante
  14. Alighieri. With a strong infusion of Latin
  15. for religious, academic, and educational
  16. purposes, written Standard Italian has tended
  17. to be highly formal and divorced from the
  18. many regional dialects, which are often
  19. mutually unintelligible.
