  1. In British history, the Catholic conspiracy
  2. to blow up James I and his parliament on 5
  3. Nov 1605. It was discovered through an
  4. anonymous letter. Guy Fawkes was found in the
  5. cellar beneath the Palace of Westminster,
  6. ready to fire a store of explosives. Several
  7. of the conspirators were killed, and Fawkes
  8. and seven others were executed. The event is
  9. commemorated annually in England on 5 Nov by
  10. fireworks and burning `guys' on bonfires. The
  11. searching of the vaults of Parliament before
  12. the opening of each new session, however, was
  13. not instituted until the `Popish Plot' of
  14. 1678.
