Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county
of North West England, created in 1974. In
1986, most of the functions of the former
county council were transferred to
metropolitan district councils. Its area is
1,290sq km (498sq miles). Its towns are
Manchester, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale,
Salford, Stockport, and Wigan features
Manchester Ship Canal links it with the river
Mersey and the sea, Old Trafford cricket
ground at Stretford, and the football ground
of Manchester United.
