  1. Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county 
  2. of North West England, created in 1974. In 
  3. 1986, most of the functions of the former
  4. county council were transferred to 
  5. metropolitan district councils. Its area is 
  6. 1,290sq km (498sq miles). Its towns are 
  7. Manchester, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, 
  8. Salford, Stockport, and Wigan features 
  9. Manchester Ship Canal links it with the river 
  10. Mersey and the sea, Old Trafford cricket 
  11. ground at Stretford, and the football ground 
  12. of Manchester United.
