  2. Testament generally, the message of Christian
  3. salvation; in particular the four written
  4. accounts of the life of Jesus by Matthew,
  5. Mark, Luke, and John. Although the first
  6. three give approximately the same account or
  7. synopsis (thus giving rise to the name
  8. `Synoptic Gospels'), their differences from
  9. John have raised problems for theologians.
  10. The so-called fifth Gospel, or Gospel of St
  11. Thomas (not connected with the disciple
  12. Thomas), is a 2nd-century collection of 114
  13. sayings of Jesus. It was found in a Coptic
  14. translation contained in a group of 13
  15. papyrus codices, discovered in Upper Egypt
  16. 1945, which may have formed the library of a
  17. Gnostic community (see Gnosticism.)
