  1. A London theatre, octagonal and open to the
  2. sky, near Bankside, Southwark, where many of
  3. Shakespeare's plays were performed by Richard
  4. Burbage and his company. Built 1599 by
  5. Cuthbert Burbage, it was burned down 1613
  6. after a cannon, fired during a performance of
  7. Henry VIII, set light to the thatch. It was
  8. rebuilt in 1614 but pulled down in 1644. The
  9. site was rediscovered Oct 1989 near the
  10. remains of the contemporaneous Rose Theatre.
  11. In 1987 planning permission was granted to
  12. the US film producer Sam Wanamaker (1919-) to
  13. build a working replica of the theatre on its
  14. original site.
