A blue amphibole, Na2(Mg,Fe,Al)5Si8O22(OH)2.
Its typical occurrence is in glaucophane
schists (blue schists), which are formed form
the ocean floor basalt under metamorphic
conditions of high pressure and low
temperature; these conditions are believed to
exist in subduction systems associated with
destructive plate boundaries (see plate
tectonics), and so the occurrence of
glaucophane schists can indicate the location
of such boundaries in geological history.
