Market town in Somerset, England; population
(1981) 6,773. Nearby are two excavated lake
villages thought to have been occupied for
about 150 years before the Romans came to
Britain. The first church on the site was
traditionally founded in the 1st century by
Joseph of Arimathea. The ruins of the
Benedictine abbey built in the 10th and 11th
centuries by Dunstan and his followers were
excavated in 1963 and the site of the grave
of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere was
thought to have been identified. One of
Europe's largest pop festivals is held most
years in June.
