Three counties of S Wales - Mid, South, and
West Glamorgan - created in 1974 from the
former county of Glamorganshire. All are on
the Bristol Channel, and the administrative
headquarters of Mid and South Glamorgan is
Cardiff; the headquarters of West Glamorgan
is Swansea. Mid Glamorgan, which also takes
in a small area of the former county of
Monmouthshire to the east, contains the
coalmining towns of Aberdare and Merthyr
Tydfil, and the Rhondda in the valleys. The
mountains are in the northern part of the
county; area 1,019 sq km/394 sq mi;
population (1983) 536,400. In South
Glamorgan, there is mixed farming in the
fertile Vale of Glamorgan, and towns include
Cardiff, Penarth, and Barry; area 416 sq
km/161 sq mi; population (1983) 391,700. West
Glamorgan includes Swansea, with tin-plating
and copper industries, Margam, with large
steel rolling mills, Port Talbot, and Neath;
area 815 sq km/315 sq mi; population (1983)
366,600.
