Gin is an alcoholic drink made by distilling
a mash of maize, malt, or rye, with juniper
flavouring. It was first produced in the
Netherlands. In Britain, the low price of
corn led to a mania for gin during the 18th
century, resulting in the Gin Acts of 1736
and 1751 which reduced gin consumption to a
quarter of its previous level.
