  1. Site in Pennsylvania of a decisive battle of
  2. the American Civil War in 1863, won by the
  3. North. The site is now a national cemetery,
  4. at the dedication of which President Lincoln
  5. delivered the Gettysburg Address 19 Nov 1863,
  6. a speech in which he reiterated the
  7. principles of freedom, equality, and
  8. democracy embodied in the US Constitution.
  9. The South's heavy losses at Gettysburg came
  10. in the same week as their defeat at
  11. Vicksburg, and the Confederacy remained on
  12. the defensive for the rest of the war. The
  13. battle ended Robert E Lee's invasion of the
  14. North. The address begins with `Fourscore and
  15. seven years ago', and ends with an assertion
  16. of `government of the people, by the people,
  17. and for the people'.
