  1. A gerbil is any of numerous rodents of the 
  2. family Cricetidae with elongated back legs 
  3. and good hopping or jumping ability. Gerbils 
  4. range from mouse-to rat-size, and have hairy 
  5. tails. Many of the 13 genera live in dry, 
  6. sandy, or sparsely vegetated areas of Africa 
  7. and Asia. Some breeds are popular as pets.
