  1. French genre, `kind', `type' painting scenes
  2. from everyday life. Genre paintings were
  3. enormously popular in the Netherlands and
  4. Flanders in the 17th century (Vermeer, de
  5. Hooch, and Brouwer were great exponents). The
  6. term `genre' is also used more broadly to
  7. mean a category in the arts, such as
  8. landscape painting, or literary forms, such
  9. as the detective novel.

  12. Hans-Dietrich 1927- . German politician, 
  13. chair of the West German Free Democratic 
  14. Party (FDP) 1974-85, foreign minister from 
  15. 1974. Born in Halle, East Germany, Genscher 
  16. settled in West Germany 1952. He served as 
  17. interior minister 1969-74 and then as foreign
  18. minister, committed to Ostpolitik and 
  19. European cooperation. As FDP leader, Genscher
  20. masterminded the party's switch of allegiance
  21. from the Social Democratic Party to the
  22. Christian Democratic Union, which resulted in
  23. the downfall of the Helmut Schmidt government
  24. 1982.
