(plural gemmae) a unit of vegetative
reproduction, consisting of a small group of
undifferentiated green cells. Gemmae are
found in certain mosses and liverworts,
forming on the surface of the plant, often in
cup-shaped structures, or gemmae cups. Gemmae
are dispersed by splashes of rain, and can
then develop into new plants. In many species
gemmation is more common than reproduction by
spores.
