  1. A member of the Celtic-speaking peoples who
  2. inhabited France and Belgium in Roman times;
  3. also their territory. Gauls were divided into
  4. several groups but were united by a common
  5. religion controlled by the Druid priesthood.
  6. Certain Gauls invaded Italy around 400 BC,
  7. sacked Rome, and settled between the Alps and
  8. the Apennines; this district, known as
  9. Cisalpine Gaul, was conquered by Rome in
  10. about 225 BC. The Romans conquered S Gaul
  11. between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes in
  12. about 125 BC and the remaining Gauls up to
  13. the Rhine were conquered by Julius Caesar
  14. 58-51 BC.
