A member of the Celtic-speaking peoples who
inhabited France and Belgium in Roman times;
also their territory. Gauls were divided into
several groups but were united by a common
religion controlled by the Druid priesthood.
Certain Gauls invaded Italy around 400 BC,
sacked Rome, and settled between the Alps and
the Apennines; this district, known as
Cisalpine Gaul, was conquered by Rome in
about 225 BC. The Romans conquered S Gaul
between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes in
about 125 BC and the remaining Gauls up to
the Rhine were conquered by Julius Caesar
58-51 BC.
