Archibald Edward, 1857-1937. English
physician who first recognized a class of
metabolic diseases, while studying the rare
disease alcaptonuria, in which the patient's
urine turns black on contact with air. He
calculated that the cause was a failure of
the body's metabolism to break down certain
amino acids into harmless substances like
water and carbon dioxide.
