  1. Gamma radiation is a very high-frequency 
  2. electromagnetic radiation, similar in nature 
  3. to X-rays but of shorter wavelength, emitted 
  4. by the nuclei of radioactive substances 
  5. during decay or by the interactions of 
  6. high-energy electrons with matter. Cosmic 
  7. gamma rays have been identified as coming 
  8. from pulsars, radio galaxies, and quasars, 
  9. although they cannot penetrate the Earth's 
  10. atmosphere.
