Theory that the Earth's living and nonliving
systems form an inseparable whole that is
regulated and kept adapted for life by living
organisms themselves. Since life and
environment are so closely linked, there is a
need for humans to understand and maintain
the physical environment and living things
around them. The Gaia hypothesis was
elaborated by James Lovelock in the 1970s.
