Member of the Celtic branch of the
Indo-European language family, spoken in
Ireland, Scotland, and (until 1974) the Isle
of Man. It is, along with English, one of the
national languages of the Republic of
Ireland, with over half a million speakers,
and is known there both as Irish and Irish
Gaelic. In Scotland, speakers of Gaelic
number around 90,000 and are concentrated in
the Western Isles, in parts of the NW coast
and in the city of Glasgow. Gaelic has been
in decline for several centuries, subject
until recently to neglect within the British
state. There is a small Gaelic-speaking
community in Nova Scotia, Canada.
