  1. Warship, an escort vessel smaller than a
  2. destroyer. Before 1975 the term referred to a
  3. warship larger than a destroyer but smaller
  4. than a light cruiser. In the 18th and 19th
  5. centuries a frigate was a small, fast sailing
  6. warship. The frigate is the most numerous
  7. type of larger surface vessel in the British
  8. Royal Navy. Britain's type-23 frigate (1988)
  9. is armoured, heavily armed (4.5 inch naval
  10. gun, 32 Sea Wolf anti-missile and
  11. anti-aircraft missiles, and a
  12. surface-to-surface missile), and, for
  13. locating submarines, has a large helicopter
  14. and a hydrophone array towed astern. Engines
  15. are diesel-electric up to 17 knots, with gas
  16. turbines for spurts of speed to 28 knots.
