  2. 1789-1799 that saw the end of the French 
  3. monarchy. Although the revolution began as an 
  4. attempt to create a constitutional monarchy, 
  5. by late 1792 demands for long-overdue reforms 
  6. resulted in the proclamation of the First 
  7. Republic. The violence of the revolution, 
  8. attacks by other nations, and bitter 
  9. factional struggles, riots, and 
  10. counterrevolutionary uprisings consumed the 
  11. republic.
