  2. The ruling body of the sport is the F.I.A.-
  3. Federation Internationale de l'Automobile-
  4. which enacts the rules and regulations for
  5. all events including the F1 World Drivers
  6. Championship. This is based on points gained
  7. in the various Grand Prix(9,6,4,2,1 being 
  8. given for the first six places in each race).
  9. One of the most prolific British drivers was
  10. Jackie Stewart who, in the years 1965 to
  11. 1973, had 27 championship Grand Prix wins and
  12. one the World Championship 3 times.
  13. Other British Champions in the 50's,60's and
  14. 70's were Mike Hawthorn(1958), Graham Hill
  15. (1962 & 1968), Jim Clark(1965), who had seven
  16. wins during the 1963 season, and James Hunt
  17. (1976). Other Greats have been Juan Fangio
  18. (Argentina), who was world champion five
  19. times, Alberto Ascari(Italy) world champion
  20. twice in 1952/53, Jack Brabham(Australia)
  21. world champion thrice in 1959/60/66, Emerson
  22. Fittipaldi(Brazil) world champion twice in
  23. 1972/74, Niki Lauda(Austria) who was world 
  24. champion twice in 1975/77 and had a total
  25. 25 wins during his career and, of course,
  26. Stirling Moss. Among the successful drivers
  27. of the 1980's and 1990's were Ayrton Senna
  28. (Brazil), who was probably the most COMPLETE
  29. driver of his time and who rates among the
  30. greats such as Fangio. Tragically killed
  31. during lap 6 of the 1994 San Marino G.P.
  32. he was World Champion three times and had a
  33. total of 41 wins during his career. Others
  34. were Alain Prost(France), Michael Schumacher
  35. (Germany), Nigel Mansell and the present
  36. World Champion Damon Hill, both British.

  56. Motor Racing, however, can be said to have
  57. started almost with the invention of the
  58. automobile. The "Horseless Carriage" was
  59. considered to be so dangerous that a man had
  60. to walk in front of the vehicle carrying a
  61. red flag, therefore it wasn't too long before
  62. record breaking attempts and competitions
  63. were taking place. The Sport was subjected to
  64. regulations at the beginning of the 1900's
  65. with, first, the Gordon Bennet Cup and then
  66. the first of the International grand prix
  67. formula races- the French Grand Prix in 1906.
  68. As Road racing became popular and speeds 
  69. increased so serious accidents increased,
  70. which led to the building of Motor racing
  71. circuits. Brooklands(England)in 1906 and
  72. Indianapolis(America) in 1911 were among the
  73. first venues and so motor racing, as we know
  74. it today, wasborn.
